“Remnant,” directed by Australian filmmaker Mike Horan, is a polished-looking time loop thriller. It delves into the complexities of the human mind and the consequences of experimental technology. Then it throws a serial killer into the mix for good measure.
The film follows Grace, a young woman who, after a tragic car accident, is brought back to life by Dr. Adriana Stone’s revolutionary chip.
This newly designed chip was created to regenerate biological code and prevent brain injuries and mental illness. But like many antagonists in films like this, Stone isn’t the beaker and glasses type of scientist. She’s the evil and menacing type with an agenda to boot.
“Fear what hides in the shadows”
Remnant tagline.
After her recovery, Grace is haunted by visions, headaches, and dreams that morph into terrifying nightmares. These supernatural occurrences blur her perception of reality to the point where she questions her own sanity. Whispers in the night and ghostly apparitions are intricately tied to a serial killer.
This killer seems to exist in her illusory state. The past and present collide. They remind us that we can’t change the past. We can only strive to make better choices for the future.
Horan is known for his work on Australian television dramas such as “Young Doctors,” “Prisoner,” and “Neighbours.” He brings his extensive experience to this film. His direction is evident in the film’s dark and atmospheric cinematography, which effectively captures Grace’s confusion and torment.
The performances of the lead actors are convincing, with Grace’s struggle between life and death portrayed with raw intensity. Dr. Stone’s offbeat agenda adds depth to the narrative.
If you enjoy movies that leave you with unanswered questions, then you’re in for a treat. You will wonder about the hows and whys of the technology and Grace’s supernatural experiences.
I was happy that a serial killer turned up. It changed the tone of the title dramatically. A boy from Grace’s past, adds a nice dark twist to the story, blurring the lines even further.
“Remnant” is a visually stunning film with a score that fully immersed everything in Grace’s nightmarish journey.
The film may have a few narrative hiccups. However, its exceptional cinematography and ominous atmosphere make it an essential watch for enthusiasts of psychological thrillers.
