Tau 2018

If you’re a sci-fi and artificial intelligence fan, then Tau will be a movie you will love. It also doesn’t hurt if you’re a fan of Maika Monroe as she features quite a bit in this film too. It’s a given the cast in Tau is good quality, but overall is the film itself a bit of a fail?

Tau is set in a futuristic house, where an AI voice controls everything inside its four walls. Get the low down from Mother of Movies on this film and we’ll also list a few movies like Tau you might like too. Don’t forget to check out the Tau trailer featured below alongside some options for where to watch the film. It’s on Netflix in most countries.

Tau Science Fiction Movie Review – Netflix

Netflix sheen is becoming a term I see more and more. Tau will not be one of the times this phrase is not applied. It’s often used in movies that have a lot going for them but overall is lacking in either substance or quality. Take “Mute” a similar movie to Tau, for example, where the sheen’s applied so thick that the movie disappears into a sea of neon lighting.

Tau 2018 is not a terrible flick. It’s the type of movie you could easily sit down with on a Friday night. Too tired to go out but not tired enough to go to bed early? A movie like this is what you need.

The violence is restrained with barely any could-have-been gruesome scenes that happen out of shot. There is enough substance to the storyline with the ending sequence being very appealing. Certain points of the film became a little cringe-worthy, but there are still enough watchable aspects to entertain.

I’ve already seen some reviews that pull references from insanely horror films like Cube (1997). The only thing Tau has in common with Cube is that is…a house is square and so is a cube. This is in the high-tech box of sci-fi fantasy with artificial intelligence and there is nothing wrong with that.

Gary Oldman Is A Human Who Stars in Tau

Gary Oldman’s portrayal of Tau was unconvincing; his attempt to humanize the AI-infused system was misguided and failed to resonate, given the small three-person cast. The dialogue between the robotic voice of Tau and Julia only served to solidify the burden of foolishness carried by Alex’s character, the creator of the technology.

In the second act, Tau often reminded me of the door in Labyrinth (1986). The door’s keyhole eventually got a key shoved back into his mouth. A key shoved in Tau’s mouth may not have been a bad idea for Alex in this instance. At the very least the no-talking face masks may have warranted re-ordering.  If everything remaining stable in the house is reliant on Julia no talky-talky.. masks are a must.

Irrespective of my grievances, this movie isn’t terrible. If you leave your brain at the door and watch it slightly drunk like I did, it goes ok. It’s got some cool moments for those who love science fiction. It has awesome robots and a pretty girl getting the upper hand on a not-entirely-mad scientist.

Who Wrote It?

Tau’s screenplay writer Noga Landau wrote a few episodes of NBC’s The Magicians series which I kind of love and hate at the same time. I couldn’t stop watching it though. The film’s director is Federico D’Alessandro and it’s his first feature film after holding storyboard artist, animatics design, and creature design roles in many big-budget films.

Ant-Man 2015, Captain America, Thor, “I Am Legend” and the Chronicles of Narnia are all well-known to be beyond beautiful, artistically awesome, and in some cases subtly scary. But how did adding some directorial credit to that list go? After this film, he returned to the storyboard artist and did Venom, Free Guy, and Loki to name a few.

  • Release: June 29, 2018, to Netflix.
