Unlisted Owner

I agree, found footage of horror movies has indeed sparked controversy among audiences. While some may view the genre as a cop-out or a cheap alternative, I believe it offers a unique and immersive experience for viewers. The shaky camera movements and raw, unpolished aesthetics add a sense of realism that traditional horror films often lack. By blurring the line between fiction and reality, found footage horror movies have the power to truly immerse and terrify their audiences. So, despite the controversy, I believe that found footage is a valuable and integral part of the horror genre. Unlisted Owner is available to watch on various streaming platforms like Plex, Filmzie, TubiTv, and Vudu.

Unlisted Owner, is considered a micro-budget film. For an indie film with plenty of heart, look no further than Jed Brian. Check out the end of the article for an interview Mother of Movies had with this young filmmaker, Jed Brian.

Unlisted Owner Review

A mysterious and unseen figure mowing down unsuspecting victims who happen upon a particular house. If the two were smooshed together, it would be a pretty interesting flick. In the case of the Netflix movie, I didn’t cut it much slack. It had a budget of $ 100,000, trained actors, and all the fancy production inclusions one would expect. Nevertheless, the Unlisted Owner had none of that and still has things going for it.

“Horror Crimes”

Without reservation, the Unlisted Owner commits quite a few, ‘horror crimes’ (things like group separation for eg.) peppered throughout Unlisted Owner. Some could be explained away by too much beer, but not everyone is drunk. On the positive side, three different cameras are used and most are explained adequately. The final scenes were pretty enjoyable as were the opening ones for setting the scene and making you watch for things that might be creeping around the corner. For a debut film from a group of twenty-somethings, it’s really not a trainwreck. On the contrary, I’ve seen much worse.

Without a doubt, what it lacked is pacing and some attention to realism that just smacks you in the face. Small towns and local kids knocking around are entirely accurate scenarios but buckets with blood left in them when there are ample EMS crews don’t. I hate reviewers that whinge about expletives in horror but the overuse of the word ‘dude’ among F*cK’s almost caused me to reach for the fast-forward button. I was positive this film wasn’t scripted, but I asked and it was. Although the dialogue gave the right atmosphere of a group of mates recording their day, it wasn’t enjoyable because I don’t know them.

Indie Filmmakers Often Choose Found Footage

Another key point is; that there are a lot of cameras pointing at grass and cameras pointing at knees and cameras pointing at anything except for anything interesting. There are a lot of minutes uncut. In most indie movies where this technique is used, there is movement or sounds alluding to something else. Here it’s just dead space. The car ride was particularly lengthy and caused my mum-brain to freak out. The driver was the most intoxicated of the group. Can anyone else drive? It’s important to realize that sometimes you shouldn’t perpetuate drunk driving unless you are trying to prove it’s a killer too.

Afterward, I didn’t hate it. Straightaway I was awarded a bonus half-star for catching me in a jump scare I wasn’t expecting. This is what these guys can do with a few cameras and some friends. Imagine what they might achieve with some funding.

And Lastly, the Interview with Jed Brian

  • What made you want to make a film?

I’ve loved horror films my whole life but when I saw Eli Roth’s Hostel it really chilled me to the bone. That film made me realize real-life horror so I started coming up with film ideas based on things that scared me so that’s how I got my start.

  • What kind of background do you have that fits in with filmmaking?

I majored in digital entertainment and game design. So I had a little bit of editing background.

  • I’ve read a mixed bag of reviews for this low-budget indie movie, how hard is it to read the bad ones?

It’s not that bad I know horror isn’t a genre for everyone and if they gave it a shot I can’t knock them for it not being what they like. But we have had great support with the film and have a lot of people who believe in the movie so that always helps. I love slasher films and also found footage.

  • Do you have any favorites from those areas? What was the last movie you watched?

Oh man, I would say my favorite slasher is Halloween or Texas Chainsaw and as far as found footage Grave Encounters and I recently watched Cannibal Holocaust it completely blew me away!

Inspiration for Indie Filmmakers

  • I was reading through some reviews and noticed this film being compared with Blair Witch. I found nothing similar except perhaps the shaky-cam technique. What was the inspiration behind your idea for this film?

I did get some inspiration from that and paranormal activity as far as the style of filmmaking which is found footage but the stories are completely different so not much to compare.

  • What issues did you face in fully realizing the Unlisted Owner’s potential? Was there anything you wish could have been added to the finished indie product that was impossible to do?

I wish the middle didn’t drag as much. The road trip was added later to help with the length of the film. So that’s my only regret that we didn’t get to the house sooner.

  • I found the scripting of the character to be quite onerous at times. Was there much scripting or did you just let the cast run with a basic direction?

They actually followed the script very closely. I mean there was the occasional thing here in there but when I wrote the script I already knew who was going to be in the film, so I just wrote the lines around the way my actors speak in real life to make it more natural.

  • This is your debut movie. Have you got any upcoming films on the agenda?

I wrote a script called Meth House we have a teaser trailer out on YouTube and I have several other scripts. It just depends on the money we make off of Unlisted Owner on which one we will do.
