Dinner In America Brings Punk Rock Back

Dinner in America Movie 2020

“Dinner in America” is a quirky love story about a rebellious punk rock delinquent and one of his fans. Written and produced by Adam Carter Rehmeier, this particular director is no stranger to controversial films. He was responsible for The Bunny Game in 2011. However, don’t be alarmed if you’ve heard or seen that particular horror title and hated its guts. Dinner In America is nothing like that. This is a romantic comedy, albeit a twisted one, but all the same, it’s about love. Rehmeier who confessed in his director’s statement said;

“With each new project, I try to challenge myself, to get out of my comfort zone, and a “love story” would normally be way outside of my wheelhouse. But for me, this love story is different, as it embodies my own punk rock ethos.”

Dinner in America is a Punk Rock Movie

What the Dinner in America movie does exceptionally well has just as much to do with the original music featured within the movie as it does with the creation of a super cute experience between Simon (Kyle Gallner) and Patty (Emily Skeggs.) A particular short song at the end is so catchy, that you’ll find yourself singing it for weeks after you hear it.

The title has a unique sense of humor that won’t appeal to everyone but I thought it was very funny and enjoyed its messy nature. The storyline takes the stance that many coming-of-age saccharine-sweet romantic comedies dish out regularly but instead of the same old popularity contest between cheerleaders and an outcast, Dinner In America switches out that monotone diatribe and gives it a naughty edge with an old-school punk rocker reliability I certainly wish there was more of.

Punk Rock Kids in Love

Simon’s introduction is action-packed and leads to a rather memorable explanation as to why he is on the run from the cops for most of the film’s 106-minute run time. Strangely instead of making Simon look like a feral, his reactive behavior wins you over. Without an extensive background to judge him on, it’s easier to see Simon as a kid on the wrong side of the tracks, doing his best to get by. To be fair, he’s entirely aggressive most of the time, but he still manages to make you want to applaud every time he does it.

In similar enthusiasm, Patty is an opposing force of nature. Representing the quiet and introverted role of any good romantic comedy, she is hounded by three uncouth lads on a regular occasion. She works for a pet shop with a boss, who with no other word that comes to mind to describe him is a complete and utter d*ck. Her life consists of all sorts of moments where she seems entirely alone. The reveal of Patty’s under-cover personality is a slow one, which just makes it all the more enjoyable.
