Searching is the best thriller movie to come out of 2018. It follows David Kim (John Cho) as his 16-year-old daughter goes missing. An investigation is opened up and the detective assigned to the case is doing everything she can. 37 hours later there are still no leads so David decides to search the one place no one has looked yet. The sequel to this film is called Missing 2023 and subsequently is just as fantastic to watch.
Where are all your secrets kept? David begins with his daughter’s laptop and in a hyper-modern thriller told via the technology devices we use every day to communicate, David traces every step his daughter took using her digital footprints. Will he find her before she disappears forever?
“We are what we hide.”
Quote from the Searching movie
The premise of the story in the Searching movie is a very contemporary take on a popular theme. You have to admit John Cho can hold his own and shines in the lead as David Kim here. I must say, it’s pretty amazing that a film like this could even work for a start. Its primary focus is on Facetime, computer screens, phone messages, and footage from surveillance with little narrative seen elsewhere.
Opening scenes are heart-wrenchingly put together and show a happy family invaded by the big C. Once Margot goes missing, the film takes on a mind of its own. David follows the clues through YouTube, voice messages, Instagram, and many other popular media platforms that everyone’s using. At every turn, I stayed mesmerized by David’s one-man-army search party. I wondered if I had the capabilities to track someone I knew down with such vigor. I’m not sure that I could do as well but I certainly picked up some really useful tips.
Final Thoughts On The Searching Movie
I’m certain many parents with similarly aged kids are all breathing a sigh of relief right about now and re-instating family dinners. They might also find themselves implementing some no-technology time in their day in favor of talking and whatnot. If this film doesn’t make you think twice about appearances or lack thereof on social media platforms then you’re better than me at finding a tech-life balance.
It encompasses the theory I see sometimes about how social media allows us to create identities that sometimes aren’t as accurate as they seem. Smiling faces plastered all over Facebook with a thousand friends don’t automatically result in close connections. Having millions of likes on YouTube videos doesn’t mean you’re popular in real life.
I enjoy movies about technology because I love it. Films that work as well as this don’t happen often so if you get the chance to see “Searching” do it. It’s a fantastic popcorn flick and might just make you think about what matters in your life for a moment or two.

Megan Is Missing Andriod Game
I played an iPhone game a little while ago called S.I.M aka Megan is Missing, depending on your country of origin. It reminded me of this movie a lot. It was pretty creepy too so if you feel like adding a free app to your phone and playing detective in a multiple-choice game to this film give this a go…
