In a world where politically correct voices have gone absolutely bananas, I watched these five new series on Netflix with a certain rambunctious glee. Many viewers get offended by certain topics, genres, themes, and their portrayals in movies and television. Take the example of 13 Reasons Why writers edge the line so much, the series is a constant source of debate. Can we not talk about the realities of life? It almost feels like it’s not okay to laugh at things that are funny or stand out in life even if they are uncomfortable.
Despite all this, Netflix has some of the best TV shows to binge-watch ever, whether you are looking to be able to talk about the “it” show of the moment, or relax and chill out. Binge-watching can sometimes help ease the stress at the end of the day as it can keep you distracted from your mundane activities.
Many shows and series, on the other hand, tend to leave the platform after a while. As a result, you may preferably watch the shows or movies leaving Netflix before proceeding with the list I have provided below.
Whatever your intention, be it wanting to watch those movies with your friends at a house party or spending your holiday season binge-watching your favorite show on Netflix for the final time, the list below can undoubtedly provide you with topics to discuss. Here, take a look at Insatiable, The End of the World series, Atypical, Everything Sucks and After Life.
13 Reasons Why is the Most Debated Show
13 Reasons Why is the most debated series. Everyone needs to be on equal footing and no one is allowed to be left out. This is not the case when it comes to real life, though and topics that might seem to be off-limits shouldn’t be just because they might offend someone.
Best TV Shows 2018 List
This list of series was all released on Netflix in 2018 and are all amazing. Just like 13 Reasons Why, it’s great to see stories that aren’t so typical and generic. Watch them without your politically correct hat on and just appreciate that shit happens sometimes. While I’m talking about 13 Reasons Why, did you see the cast for season 3? Newcomers for the 3rd season are Christian Navarro, Miles Heizer, Devin Druid, Ross Butler, Anne Winters, Steven Weber, Amy Hargreaves, and Grace Saif.
1. Insatiable
The Insatiable series has petitions on the internet calling for its cancellation concerning body shaming. They claim that it promotes the idea that to be popular you must be thin and beautiful. Even before Insatiable aired there were publications and groups of people with pitchforks. They denounced the premise from its preview trailer. I must admit, when I watched the trailer I didn’t think too highly of it. Not because of all the hullabaloo, but because it looked like another teen melodrama set in a high school with a blonde at the helm behaving badly.
This show is brilliant and definitely falls under the banner of one of the best TV shows to binge-watch ever. Those who have seen this wonderfully UN-politically-correct series will know it goes beyond its advertised disguise. The trailer makes it look like it’s about a girl who loses weight and becomes popular. Instead, what I saw was a show about just about every walk of life. What I saw was that people can be judged from the outside when it’s really about what’s inside that counts.
The cast is amazing and capable of pronouncing every single facet it produces. As one of the best TV shows to binge watch, the whole twelve hours of this show can be completed in just under roughly four days. I am not saying this series is not a mosh-pit of dark humor and intentionally crude themes, because it is. It features just about every taboo subject you could poke a stick at, but that’s what’s so great about it. Season 2 of Insatiable is now on Netflix for your viewing pleasure.
Calm Your Farm, Insatiable is Still One of the Best TV Shows to Binge Watch Ever
There are so many opportunities to dissect this show. It’s worth its own very special review but here’s a recap. It’s been renewed (thanks to TV gods!) and I for one will be eagerly awaiting season two with bated breath. I want to see just how much cake Patty eats. So breathe out and relax.
Look beyond what you think it is saying and try to really understand what it is saying. This series is not trying to send a message other than that the world is a wacky place. It’s full of stereotypes, cruelty, and the absolute reality of what many people go through every day. It doesn’t want to cure you of your binge-eating disorder or help you create a beard for your hidden sexuality crisis. It just wants to show you that it’s all part and parcel of the lives we live in.
Insatiable was canceled after two seasons citing not enough audience support for the show.

2. The End of The F***ing World Series
The End of the World series is another teen-angst drama set against a girl and boy both struggling with internal demons. James is in crisis and thinks he has psychopathic tendencies and stumbles across Alyssa who’s quite rightly lost in the world and can’t understand her own life. Anyone who’s been part of a misspent youth or confusing adolescent upbringing might find solace in this out-of-control storyline. How small decisions can impact the bigger picture? Jessica Barden ceremoniously steals the show in this ten-episode binge-worthy tale of bad decisions and even worse role-modeling from the unintentional adults in this show. Her soulless attitude is a meticulous disguise of grief and misfortune laid upon her by life.
Funnily enough, despite themes of suicide, drugs, pedophilia, rape, and parental neglect it’s the least controversial series on this list. There are no copious amounts of people against it in an uproar. In fact, so enamored are viewers with the whole kit and caboodle, that the only thing I could find that amounts to any controversy is from those who feel like a second season will ruin the show. It’s been deemed so perfect by some that predicting what might happen for season 2 is just too much to handle.
Season 2 aired in 2019.

3. Atypical is one of the best TV Shows to Binge Watch
Atypical is the odd one out in this list as it’s not thought of as highly controversial. It was through a discussion I had online that I realized that the very subject it delves into is what makes it controversial. The story follows the life of Sam who is 18 and has an autism spectrum. In the background are his family and friends. They all have their own personal struggles as a result of or through their own pathways chosen in life.
Where’s the Controversy?
What I saw as a perfectly commendable humorous sitcom with engaging and likable characters is apparently what makes it controversial. I was told that this show doesn’t show the reality of autism. Similarly to those people who took an anti-fat-shaming billboard to ‘Insatiable’ are groups of people who think television shows that dare to utilize touchy subject matter are supposed to be as realistic as a documentary piece on it. It’s not, so calm down people.
While the show absolutely covers a broad area of things that autism spectrum people encounter its backdrop of his family and friends are the set pieces that hold it all together. Brigette Lundy-Paine plays Casey and, I, for one adore her in this. For the two seasons, we encounter a multitude of events and themes that envelop all seasons of life. Being a parent, becoming a parent, being in school, making friends, having sex, drinking alcohol, affairs, therapy, and marriages in crises are just some of the topics it washes over.
Best TV Shows to Binge-Watch Ever
This one didn’t pronounce any revelations for me about life lessons. Nor did I gain particular educational viewpoints on disabilities. I do think it certainly normalizes a lot of behavior that we see every day from a whole range of people and spins it into an enjoyable watch with some very comedic overtones. So much of this is in ‘feel-good’ territory though, it’s a great show to put on if you’ve had a shitty day. And that’s why it’s included as being one of the best TV shows to binge watch.
4. Everything Sucks
Everything Sucks was canceled after its premiere season on Netflix, but the story rounds out well enough to recommend watching it even though. This series is so pronounced in its 1990s vibe that if you lived in that era you’ll feel like you’re back there.
The relationship between the two main characters is the cutest thing I’ve ever seen even if it’s only one-sided. Nearly every episode had me saying “nawwwwwww” in a totally annoying voice but I just couldn’t help it.
The series shines a light on the struggles an LGBTQ girl might encounter as a teenager and intersperses them with other coming-of-age topics. If you didn’t see the series, it follows Kate Messner and her widowed father who is also the school principal. She is crushing on one of the girls from school while being pursued by a fellow student Luke. While it started slow, it builds up over the thirteen episodes into quite the binge-worthy season.
You’ll never guess where the controversy came from though. In real life, Kate is played by Peyton Kennedy and is only 14 years old. Her love interest is Emaline played by Sydney Sweeney who’s 20. Many viewers were extremely uncomfortable with not only the age gap but the kiss is French style which kinda-sorta sexualizes a 14-year-old girl in a series on television. And fair enough too. No matter how good the show was, perhaps that was an oversight by the show’s creators.

5. After Life TV Show
So basically the argument goes like this:
“I’d rather be nowhere with her than somewhere without her”
Tony, from After Life series on Netflix
One of the best TV shows to binge that I have ever come across in 2019’s lineup on Netflix is After Life. For a series that embodies losing your better half, Ricky Gervais sends this ultra-controversial topic into a feel-good easy binge-able show. Quite simply, Tony’s wife dies and he loved her. Like, a lot. The second season of the series was released on 24 April 2020.
Not only does the TV show tackle life after breast cancer but it epitomizes the grief process in a darkly comedic way. Tony decides that he will simply do whatever he wants no matter the consequences. Definitely, an addictive series to add to your watchlist immediately. Ricky Gervais doing what he does best.
