‘Unfriended 2’ Dark Web A Savage Killer & Multiple Endings

Unfriended 2 released in 2018 is a movie made for the bi-tech-curious. 2018 saw a flurry of tech-related dark web films. The cast for the Unfriended movie sequel is solid, and the writers did a good job, but is this film about the dark web one of the best in this niche? In the meantime, films like “Upgrade” showed us that the future will enable us to arm our bodies. “14 Cameras” gave us nightmares about that next hotel booking and always, always washing our toothbrushes before we use them.

I applaud filmmakers looking to provide an experience within a story that resonates with tech nerds and those who love a bit of a group Skype situation. Where the film “Friend Request” failed, this one succeeds so if you’ve seen that and not this, give this one a watch and it will change your mind for sure.

Previously, I enjoyed the first film “Unfriended” back in 2014. It’s the type of story that is scarily close to being a worst-case scenario that fits into real life. Hackers aren’t known to be killers. I had a quick browse on the web and apart from real people occasionally being murdered after being part of a social media-led tryst, I couldn’t find anything about a hacker trying to kill you. And this is basically where the story sets up from.

Can We Still Be Friends? Unfriended Movie Review

Above all, I find it amazing that films centered around a computer screen can be exciting to watch. As a result, Unfriended 2 must have been an awesome pitch:

“What if you found a laptop and while you were on the laptop, you discovered that there was a bunch of stuff on it that would land you in very troubled waters? “

Unfriended 2

With this in mind, this is what happens to Matias when he unsuspectingly retrieves a laptop sitting in lost and found at his work. If you’re a fan of the first film, this one doesn’t color much outside the lines of that one. The previous film heavily suggests the killer is a ghostly virus. In the dark web version, the people/persons are dark web enthusiasts looking for real-life snuff.

Unfriended 2: Dark Web

More importantly, Unfriended is the kind of film that made me put my phone down to keep track of the narrative which is sometimes typed on the screen. Matias’s girlfriend is deaf, and he simply thought that taking a laptop left behind by a careless stranger would solve all his problems. Having a shiny new computer would enable him to make an app to use sign language in real time. His girl doesn’t much care for Skype… I mean why would she…he can’t sign and Skype is known for lag. Lip reading is hard at the best of times.

While Unfriended 2 movie runs along at an excellent pace and provides heaps of things to keep one occupied. It does raise a lot of questions that kind of amount to giant plot holes though. If you are the type of person who can forgive that type of thing, you will love this tense and entertaining horror movie. In this instance, I found it somewhat easy to overlook the myriad of issues I thought about once the credits had rolled. Just turn your brain off and you’ll be fine.

I’m enthusiastic about the multiple endings of Unfriended 2 that were provided to cinema-goers. Potluck endings (which are detailed at the end of this review.)

Despite the plot holes, I like a good story, and Unfriended 2 gave me what I ultimately wanted. I had a good time with it even if some of the scenarios seem a little out of reach. Performances from the cast who primarily sit in the ugly glow of a computer screen were great, full of expression, and not over the top.

These people will never pass as smart tech nerds who like Skype but I’ve seen narratives with less. Sometimes you need a protagonist to keep digging deeper even when Wikipedia tells you someone on the other end of some hidden files like drilling holes into people’s heads for fun.

Where would we be if Matias just shut it down and went and had a pizza with his girlfriend?

Which Ending for Unfriended 2 Did You Like Best?

Ending 1

Everyone dies.

If you saw the film and everyone dies, then you have seen ending 1. Even though we don’t see Amaya killed we can assume she is killed as she is tackled to the ground by one of the hackers.

Ending 2

Buried Alive.

If you saw the ending where Amaya lives, then you have seen ending 2. Ending 2 changes a few deaths and instead of Matias getting hit by a truck, he instead gets buried alive. Amaya arrives at the place where they first kissed and Matias is underground. Although he has his phone, it’s been hacked, and only sends messages to Amaya saying that he wishes he could sign better.

Additionally, in ending 2 Damon still dies by hanging, however, it’s he who sees Erica on the laptop instead of Matias (because he’s busy being buried alive and someone needs to see the girl that got a hole drilled in her head.)

Ending 3

Matias sends a text to Amaya and they meet where they first share a kiss. After she arrives several Charons film her in hiding.

The Charons come out of hiding and, restrain them. The Circle launches a poll on the screen and the votes start coming in with “no.” However, a group message is posted by Charon IX titled “They_Earned_It.m4v”

The video is a recording of Matias bargaining for Erica from Charon IV with his Bitcoin money. This convinces other Circle members to vote yes which swings the majority. They’re released and have a romantic cuddle. Members are seen with their faces covered peering into the laptops that are still on at each site where their friends have been killed earlier. The camera then switches to, Erica waking up in Matias’s apartment with the hole drilled into her head. When she sees herself on the screen, she screams.
