Veronica Movie Still

This review for Veronica, regarded as one of the scariest horror films in the world cinema section of Netflix, contains spoilers. Released in 2017, this chilling supernatural movie garnered significant attention during its promotional campaign. Numerous advertisements boldly claimed that audiences were left faint-hearted by its terrifying nature. Various articles even hailed it as “an unfinishable scary cinematic masterpiece” and deemed it the “most spine-chilling film ever.” With the prequel “Sister Death” (Spanish title Hermana Muerte) due for release in 2024, there is plenty to get excited about if you are a fan of the Veronica movie.

Veronica Movie and the Hype

Certainly, there are real cases of people watching films and having reactions like vomiting and fainting. There is even an instance from the news where a woman had a heart attack after attending a theatre and watching a scary movie. But so far, I’ve not been able to find actual evidence of any claims by distributors about audiences vomiting and fainting in the aisles.

The story is about Veronica (Sandra Escacena), charged with her three younger siblings after their father’s death. Their mother Ana (Ana Torrent) is always working and increasingly unavailable to Veronica’s plight as the film wears on. In the opinion of Mother of Movies, this is a great film and one of the best horror movies on Netflix.

Veronica 2017 Movie is Based on a True Story

Veronica hooks you in from the beginning with an engaging storyline and chilling atmosphere. As darkness descends during an Eclipse, our protagonist, accompanied by her best friend Rosa (portrayed by Angela Fabian) and Diana (played by Carla Campra) embark on a daring séance. Yet, amidst the escalating tension, Rosa’s sudden detachment raises suspicions, leaving her questioning her friend’s true motives.

The movie excels in creating an eerie ambiance, skillfully employing long shots with haunting silhouettes and ghostly figures lurking in the background. The symbolism cleverly weaves into the narrative, with a building shaped like a cross and a painting portraying a fierce wolf pack chasing a deer. These visual elements gradually unravel, enriching the storytelling. It is worth noting that even non-Spanish speakers cannot overlook Veronica donning a t-shirt adorned with a fierce wolf.

Apart from minor discrepancies between the film and the heightened expectations it generated, the film captures the essence of an atmospheric and spine-tingling cinematic experience. Its impressively crafted scenes and the palpable sense of unease it evokes make it an undeniable must-watch horror movie.

Is Veronica A Good Movie?

There is no doubt this film is exceptional. It combines elements of possession and personal growth. While some may view the film’s possession tropes as predictable, when intertwined with Veronica’s newfound responsibilities and the betrayal of her best friend, it creates a truly captivating and multifaceted narrative. This movie not only delivers a solid possession film, but it also succeeds in being a truly memorable cinematic experience.

Veronica struggles with the complexities of life. She shoulders the weight of her siblings’ needs and her own personal grief, all while navigating the tumultuous journey of adolescence. While some may question whether Veronica is purely a possession movie, I believe the subtle nuances and unexplained phenomena throughout the film leave room for interpretation. Whether or not supernatural entities are indeed real or simply manifestations of Veronica’s troubled psyche is up to the viewer. This ambiguity adds depth and intrigue to an already compelling story.

Veronica Movie Ending Explained

The ending of the movie Veronica showcases a pivotal climax in which the police, in their attempt to intervene, are unexpectedly struck down with a mysterious sickness. This sudden turn of events provides an additional indication of the presence of evil. As the lights flicker, the unsettling atmosphere escalates. The spirits within the narrative begin leaving their eerie marks on mattresses. The significance of these markings becomes evident through the police markers, serving as tangible evidence that others have witnessed the supernatural occurrences as well.

Then there is the question of whether she became a monster due to the circumstances surrounding her. Without the inclusion of a seance or any supernatural rituals, this debate remains open to interpretation. Nevertheless, this ambiguity adds to the depth of Veronica’s inner turmoil. It also presents the possibility that her vulnerability and internal struggles made her susceptible to demonic possession. Acknowledging this complexity adds an extra layer to the narrative and encourages me to look at the story more deeply.

Best Horror Movies on Netflix

While Veronica may not be the most terrifying horror movie I have encountered, it is by no means a disappointment either. In fact, among the world cinema selection, it stands out as one of the scariest examples within the horror genre. The performances delivered by the cast are commendable. Particularly considering that three of the actors are young children. These performances manage to avoid the typical annoyance factor often associated with child characters.
