“The ‘Pooka’ movie can be enjoyed on Hulu’s ‘Into the Dark’ TV Series. Released on December 7, 2018, this installment is perfect for the holiday season as it revolves around a Christmas theme. The plot centers around Wilson, an aspiring actor, who auditions for a role with a festive touch. However, instead of his prepared monologue, the casting directors ask him to showcase his dancing skills. Surprisingly, he lands the role and becomes the embodiment of Christmas as the new mascot. Get ready for a captivating and unique Christmas experience!”
For those of you looking for a Christmas movie-themed slay-a-thon with evil Santa and reindeer who are out of their minds, you will not find that here. This Christmas episode is your multi-faceted time-lapse type puzzle story where you think you know what’s going on only to find that what you thought it was, is not. Confused? I was too for a little while.
I do feel like the story redeemed itself when the big picture is finally revealed. Unless you are a Donnie Darko fan, it helped to google the myth behind what this creature essentially is (which I did afterward.)
What is The Creature in S1.E3 ∙ Pooka!
“The púca (Irish for spirit/ghost), pooka, phouka, phooka, phooca, puca, or púka is primarily a creature of Celtic folklore. Considered to be bringers both good and bad fortune, they could either help or hinder communities. The Púca can have dark or white fur or hair.”
Dictionary Description for the real creature
The pull between this nemesis in a furry suit and Wilson is well thought out. The dark and tempered atmosphere is a fantastic setting for the narrative. Even scenes set in daylight seem to take on an unfamiliar tension. While you try and work out what angle this tale is coming from the performances within the Christmas fable are polished and well suited to the weirdness of the theme. It’s not cute but he does do a dance and sing a song that will stick in your mind just like it stuck in mine.
Again like the previous two episodes of Into the Dark series, the creature takes a familiar tale on the outside filled with a new spin by adding a giant toy to the mix. Irrespective of the stories so far being a little unoriginal, mean nothing to me. They are great and get their messages across with a wide brush.
Some audiences have found this to be a bit of a miss. For me, it’s just another evening well spent. 90-minute episodes are a fantastic choice for the binge-watcher in you.
