Kate 2021 courtesy of Netflix

If you’re struggling to find something different to watch on Netflix, Kate should be your next action movie to see. A film starring Woody Harelson and Mary Elizabeth Winstead (BrainDead horror TV Series and 10 Cloverfield Lane.) Both are great in this thriller and action version of what I can only describe as a female-led version of 2006’s Crank. This time without Jason Statham, we have Harelson as Varrick who is Kate’s handler. Kate is an assassin. having been lured into the lifestyle through trauma when she was only young, her skill set is a lethal weapon to higher-ups.

“Kate” is a phenomenally put-together action-crime movie. Choreography sequences are fantastic and involve plenty of grimace-worthy kills. Hand-to-hand combat, sharpshooting, group flight scenes, and even a battle with swords are all on the agenda. Kate unceremoniously mows down gangsters by the dozen after she discovers she’s been poisoned. Then she goes on a revenge mission to find out who and why. As Kate is an assassin by trade, there is a tonne of people to get to before she finally learns the truth.

Predictable but Solid Action

What Kate does well is that it manages to pull off an extremely generic storyline and still be entertaining. This film has been done before. It’s predictable and not once was I surprised about the circumstances of events. Combining a high-energy Japanese-infused score, bright fluorescent lighting, and the occasional comedic accent, the film is still fun and, cool.

It uses flashbacks to underpin the relationship between Varrick and Kate and then introduces the daughter of the head of a clan she was asked to kill. Ani (Miku Patricia Martineau) is initially used as a bargaining chip as Kate, while dying from plutonium poisoning, kidnaps her hoping to get information about who wants her dead. Of course, they form an unlikely bond with Ani under the impression someone else killed her father.

At the end of the day, you really can’t go wrong with a movie like this. Kate has a solid viewing experience with a great cast. It combines all the ingredients of other films just like it so it gets zero points for originality. As long as you don’t go into it expecting any surprises, fans of this type of flick will like it as much as I did.
