Last Man Down, Action & Revenge Movie
A directorial feature debut from Swedish filmmaker Fansu Njie, Last Man Down. From the opening scenes to the showdown, everything in this movie feels like a B-Movie porno with the wrong type of action. Performances are low-grade terrible and the cinematography tried my patience. The Last Man Down movie is available online to watch now.
Last Man Down opens with a beefcake of a man who just happens to not be your average woodchopper. The fact his name is John Wood not only had me in fits of giggles due to the atmospheric dynamics of feeling like a sexy movie but well, hello, his name is John Wood. The narrative is as generic as they come and centers on the post-apocalyptic landscape of a virus-filled world.
Military forces are in charge. Despite having a high-tech device to diagnose the infected and even identify citizens, they go around killing people they suspect of having the virus too. John is a victim of such actions and retreats to a solitary life in a small house after they kill his wife.
Movies with Woodchopping, Last Man Down
Normally I indulge in storylines like this, especially when combined with action-man heroes running around with their shirts off. Here though, I struggled to stay focussed on the dumb as rocks, paper-thin characters with nothing to offer. We learn that John was a mechanic and his wife liked to bake cakes. One of many flashbacks embedded with corny dialogue with this scenario featuring some line about his wife being sweet.
The introduction of Maria was a welcome reprieve until she opened her mouth and dialed in some one-liners that could rival any of John Woods’s scant lines of dialogue. I’m sure Last Man Down is inspired by an ’80s action movie of its ilk, but there simply isn’t enough meat in this hero-devoid sandwich to throw down with the likes of Arnold Schwarzenegger. Maria and John do find time between fistfights, shootouts, and flame-throwing to take a quick outdoor shower though. Fighting off bad guys all day sure is dirty work. So very dirty.
