Why Kate Siegal took this role in Netflix’s paint-by-numbers cliched film Hypnotic is a mystery. Ater watching the film, I read a few reviews on Letterboxd and it seems Mother of Movies is not alone in this line of thinking. Some even went as far as to ask the question of whether the Midnight Mass star needed a loan for money. In any case, reviewers have some funny things to say about this almost-good thriller. But if you’re looking for a movie to watch drunk and still know what happened, this is the film for you.

If you’re not instantly transfixed on the horrible wig they put Siegel in for her role as down-and-out Jen in the Hypnotic film, it’s probably because you’re looking at her clothes. Similar to when filmmakers cast a beautiful person to be uglified so they can razzle-dazzle the audience when there is a miraculous transformation later, trying to make Kate Siegel look bedraggled was obviously too hard a task. But they tried, bless them. Next to her Yoga loving penthouse living bestie, she did look like she should be having pizza at home with her cats. Sometimes.

The rest of the time, the costume department needed to be fired. Just for the wig. And someone else needed a good smack for trying to rely on clothing to signify that Jen is sad. If you’re going to use a superstar like Siegel, know her performance will do all the talking. Enough said.

Hypnosis is Not Just For Smoking

As for the film, there really aren’t any complaints about the cast. Beautiful aesthetics. Sharp precise shapes frame everything in the pristine office that the not-so-mysterious Dr. Colin Meade frequents. Nothing is kept even remotely cryptic. Close-up shots are housed by a warning-laden score to mark each and every move he makes. Memories are explained point-for-point by Jen. This is to ensure the audience knows exactly how little or how much her concern levels are. None of the planted seeds of doubt are carefully hidden or revealed at a later point. Everything happens as the story pointedly mows its way through characters until there is almost no one left. Like Dr. Meade has some sort of special Michael Myers inherent ability to commit crimes without punishment.

By the time we get to the big reveal, there is really nothing to uncover. If I was to explain the ending of the thriller movie Hypnotic, it’s possible someone might slap me on the forehead. But at least giving Dr. Meade superhuman hypnosis powers was entertaining each and every time he spat out a “sleep” command. Like some kind of hypnosis superman. Although, it’s a shame he used his gift for evil instead of at parties.
