The lab rat from the laboratory, Dexter is back in the new season 9 of the series that had everyone dismissing the show as a lost cause. Among the Dexter cast, is an all-grown-up son Harrison, his ghostly apparition sister Debra Morgan, and plenty of nostalgia. Mother of Movies began the serial killer series divided about whether a new season of the Dexter TV series could supply enough closure to forgive all that was dumped on eager fans in 2013.
The show ended in a slump. However, so far so good. The Dexter 9 series is bringing home the proverbial serial killer bacon and I am here for it. Every Sunday is time to watch New Blood and it’s my favorite time of the week. So strap on your Dexter Bowling shoes and let us strike up a conversation.
Under normal circumstances, I would wait until the new Dexter TV series was complete. I could sit and pretend the world didn’t forsake all that I wanted. I would binge-watch it in one go. But this time around, I found that Sunday nights are dedicated to waiting for the newest episode to drop and being satiated by its presence. It’s nice having Michael C Hall back in my life.
It’s nice seeing old cast favorites and new people develop a relationship with Dexter 2.0’s Jim Lindsay. Before finishing the end of the new Dexter season, I worked my way through a re-watch of the entire original series. What I discovered is that the original seasons are every bit as watchable as the new Dexter season. All things considered. The final season 8 was frustrating but not as bad as I remembered. There are, however, some continuance issues with Debra Morgan’s character when we first set eyes on Jim Lindsay. Deb, the swearing foul-mouthed sister is angry. Far too angry from where we left off.
The Dexter Revival is Here
Nonetheless, this is still a revival to match all revivals, Dexter is just as vivacious and stunningly dark as he was 10 years ago. John Lithgow’s The Trinity killer gets dropped into conversation. It left many people asking whether The Trinity Killer would return. The confusion surrounding whether the series is a reboot or a continuation is rife on the internet. Deadline reported quotes directly from showrunners that the New Blood series based on the Jeff Linsday novel Darkly Dreaming Dexter is definitely not a reboot. The show begins a perfect ten years later.
The dead stay dead and it’s immediately obvious in episode one that Jennifer Carpenter is the ghost of her former self, Debra Morgan. Arthur Mitchell does return, however, will be revisited as a flashback.
Before you can ask yourself “What happened to Hannah McKay” or “Will the New Blood season be able to compete with all that we loved about Dexter?” The season’s new location and storyline kicked off and I was left short of breath. The cinematography in the opening and closing scenes will never be as good as watching Michael C Hall slice through bacon, bloodied by tomato sauce, and cutting through a grapefruit close-up as if we were witnessing him perform a kill. But the theme songs’ music is enough to relax the senses and there are still some similarities in editing between old and new.
So, should you watch the new and improved Dexter now that he is back on screens? I will have to report back when the ten-episode season closes out. But if this quote from Clyde Phillips is anything to go by, perhaps even if you don’t trust the process you should watch it if you are a Dexter fan.
New Blood Series Ending
“The ending of this one will be stunning, shocking, surprising, unexpected. Without jinxing anything, I will say that the ending of this new season will blow up the internet.”

The original series is home to 8 seasons of the greatest serial killer goodness you can get. The slasher series revival was released in November 2021 as a limited edition series on Showtime. Despite Mother of Movies and most announcements, the showrunners wanted people to know this was not the 9th season of Dexter.
Princess Goes to the Butterfly Museum
Okay, so I’m going to let you in on a little secret. Probably not so secret now but it was certainly news to me. At the close of episode 4 of New Blood, a song played. To me, it sounded a lot like Michael C Hall and I was elated to discover the man behind the best serial killer ever has a band. Hall is the frontman for a band called Princess Goes to the Butterfly Museum and they’re currently touring in Ireland and the UK.
Too far for this duck to get to, I wanted to get some merch to tide me over. Why is postage so expensive? I really want a mug, but am unwilling to pay $50 AU for the pleasure of owning one. Le sigh.
Of course, this isn’t the first time Hall has lent his voice to the TV show. There are other series of songs featuring the man in the black apron’s beautiful tones:
- “Sometimes I Wonder” (Michael C. Hall, Daniel Licht)
- “Tonight’s the Night” (Michael C. Hall, Daniel Licht)
