Don’t Look Up, Netflix’s Funniest Movie Ends The World

Don't Look Up 2021

The Netflix all-star cast movie, “Don’t Look Up” is the perfect way to see 2021 out the door. The heavy-set drama and comedy-spiked narrative follow two astronomers who discover an exploding star in the galactic sky. This comet is more than ten kilometers wide and will destroy the Earth. But that doesn’t mean getting the word out to the population will be simple. Taking stabs at journalism, social media, and a world trained to react rather than fact-check information Don’t Look Up is as terrifying as it is wickedly amusing.

The trailer for Don’t Look boasts the story is based on real events. Mind you it also says the events haven’t happened which just goes further to acknowledge the exceptional and thought-provoking way in which the narrative plays out. The dialogue from the key cast in Don’t Look Up is as iconically accurate as it is absurd. What makes it so funny though, is just how steeped in reality the circumstances are.

Don’t Look Up movie

If a comet were to be spotted coming hurtling to Earth, would the world leaders simply announce the information as news? Would newsreaders and journalists take the crux of facts laid out and regurgitate the information with care and accuracy? Having lived in an insanely volatile universe this past few years it’s safe to say the answer to these questions is a resounding heck no. And that’s what the Don’t Look Up movie captures the essence of. It’s not like films haven’t done this before.

At the beginning of the year, the Netflix Original comedy Death to 2021 attempted to recap some of the world’s more serious and less funny events and make them unmistakenly humorous. Not because the events themselves were funny, but simply because the way the people in charge of these things handled them was beyond grossly incompetent in most instances.

Don’t Look Up Cate Blanchett

It’s the “Don’t Look Up” cast that makes this cataclysmic movie succeed. If the film were cast with a different set of famous faces, Mother of Movies is unsure whether this would have been so enjoyable. Jennifer Lawrence and Leonardo DiCaprio channel the more serious side of the film while. In addition, they also bring an extra dose of deadpan face comedy as the astronomers who simply want people to know the truth. And let’s not forget Cate Blanchett, Timothée Chalamet, and Kid Cudi are scattered among the faces we all know. There’s barely a scene in the film without someone really famous in it.

Meryl Streep and Jonah Hill are the political faces of what emerges from the film. There is a myriad of political leaders’ traits and actions that have come and gone I found myself thinking about. What surprised me the most, is that I found myself pondering whether Meryl Streep could run for office in real life. The movie is so brazen in its realism of who we have seen running countries around the world that I wondered if she wouldn’t be a perfect fit.

Jonah Hill said he was channeling the Fyre Festival for his Character

Jonah Hill’s Jason Orlean, the White Houe sidekick to the President drops so many candid and laugh-out-loud one-liners viewers who enjoy this kind of wit will be hard-pressed to hear them all through fits of laughter. As the film moves into its final quarter, the movie with a funny bone takes a nose dive into territory that is so familiar to most. Without moving into spoiler territory for the Don’t Look Up movie, I will say Tinsel Town’s propensity for hosting concerts to save us from any pressing issue goes one step further here. And it doesn’t disappoint.

If you are looking for one last movie to see this 2021 that will make you just as impressed as it will amuse you, then Don’t Look Up is that movie.
