Sometimes I think about the fact that being a movie star, for some is just a job. Albeit a very cool job and if I were a movie star looking for a paycheck, taking a terrible movie to do so would probably be okay with me. Same as taking any job, the Masquerade movie is one of those times where nothing within the storyline line is cohesive and the final moments of the film make you scratch your head and think about going back in time and making a different decision that involved not watching it.
FAQ
Is Masquerade a good movie?
Not. But if you like Bella Thorne and want to stream something in the background while you attend to housework, this is the perfect film for you.
You might get to the end of Masquerade and think you’ve missed some pivotal and beguiling action. But believe me, there is nothing to miss. If you do want a Masquerade film explanation, I found this excellent one on CultureCrypt.com. I couldn’t be bothered explaining Masquerade so it’s best to leave it to another author that did it well. Culture Crypt’s article does an awesome job of explaining the parallel storylines that eventually sum everything up in the final moments of the movie.
The reviewer also takes the same tone I have here so we have that in common. The problem with this title and everything in it is that for a storyline that is reliant on the big reveal, the lead-up gives you no entertainment.
Masquerade Review
Tying in with the title, the opening scenes are notably at a Masquerade Ball. Rose (Bella Thorne) is working as a waitress while secretly collaborating with an unknown duo of masked people. The host and hostess for the party have a little too much to drink and as the night comes to an end they talk in front of Rose about calling an Uber.
Rose pipes up that she will of course drive them safely home. We then cross to a sitter at home with daughter Casey. The masked intruders make their way inside the home. I was hoping for an easy but tense thriller. However, there is nothing but overlooked details from here on in. Casey’s nanny tucks her in for the night pre-empting her parent’s arrival home, then the lights go out.
Long story short, Casey ends up alluding to the would-be intruders. There is a lot of searching for this young girl. She is very good at hide-and-seek though and doesn’t reveal herself until she falls through the roof of her hiding place. The robbers make their way through the house taking a serious amount of runtime and stealing approximately 3 priceless artworks. So much time is spent rummaging and searching the house that literally nothing else happens until Mom and Dad make their way inside too. Strangely having additional people now inside makes it no easier to know where anyone else is at any time.
I had no issue with the performances in Masquerade. Bella Thorne was fine. Daniel (Austin Nichols) and Olivia (Mircea Monroe) were also fine. But with a lack of any sense of who these people were aside from the ginormous plop of the finale, there was no reason to be invested in any of them. Up until those final moments, Masquerade is simply a story about some robbers taking an extraneous time to rob a family. All is eventually revealed as to the agenda of everyone involved but by then, does anyone care?
