Masquerade 2021 DVD

By the time you reach the end of Masquerade, you might be wondering if you missed something crucial. Some pivotal, heart-pounding moment that ties it all together. Spoiler alert: you didn’t. If you’re scratching your head over its disjointed parallel storylines and long-winded buildup, don’t worry. CultureCrypt.com has you covered with an excellent explanation of the film’s big reveal. Honestly, I couldn’t muster the energy to unravel Masquerade myself, so hats off to them for doing the heavy lifting.

Masquerade Review

The problem with Masquerade lies not in its concept but in its execution. A thriller that hinges on a “big reveal” should entertain you on the way there, right? Unfortunately, the journey here feels more like a meandering road to nowhere.

The movie kicks off at, you guessed it, a masquerade ball. Rose (Bella Thorne), a waitress with a secret agenda, teams up with two masked accomplices. Meanwhile, her oblivious employers are sipping their way into a drunken stupor. As the party winds down, Rose offers to drive the hosts home, setting the stage for what should have been an easy yet tense home invasion thriller.

Instead, we’re introduced to Casey, a little girl at home with her nanny, waiting for her parents to return. Cue the masked intruders breaking in, and what follows is a frustratingly slow game of hide-and-seek. Casey, to her credit, proves to be a master hider. Until she isn’t, eventually crashing through a flimsy hiding spot.

Home Invasion or Just a Snooze Fest?

What happens next? A whole lot of nothing. The intruders spend an eternity rummaging through the house, managing to steal three (yes, three) priceless artworks while the movie painstakingly drags its feet. Even when Casey’s parents finally return, their presence does little to up the stakes or inject any sense of urgency. The lack of spatial awareness leaves you wondering where anyone is at any given time. This is a missed opportunity for tension if ever there was one.

Performance-wise, the cast does fine with what little they’re given. Bella Thorne delivers a solid, if unremarkable, performance as Rose. Austin Nichols and Mircea Monroe as Casey’s parents, Daniel and Olivia, are serviceable. But the script gives them nothing to work with, leaving their characters as flat as the pacing.

The finale attempts to drop a bombshell, unveiling the motives behind the night’s events. And while the twist might have been satisfying in a better movie, by this point, it’s hard to muster any interest.

What Went Wrong with the Masquerade Movie?

Masquerade could have been a taut, suspenseful thriller, but instead, it’s an overlong sequence of missed opportunities. The story takes so much time setting up its grand reveal that it forgets to make the rest of the film entertaining.

Rating:
1.5 flimsy roofs out of 5

Because that’s how much Casey’s hiding place can support before crumbling, just like the movie.
