Venom 2 was released in Australian cinemas in November 2021. The “Let There Be Carnage” sequel to the original film that came out in 2018 is streaming in the USA (see below for options.) Sadly, I wasn’t all that impressed with the first film. On the upside, the follow-up for Venom which includes superstars like Tom Holland, Tom Hardy, Michelle Williams, and Woody Harrelson is a much better and more enjoyable title to watch. Of course, review aggregate sites like Rotten Tomatoes show a different version of events with serious film critics giving the sequel a thumbs down. Audiences gave Venom: Let There Be Carnage more love with an 84% satisfaction rating.
I have to admit if I’m going to watch a Marvel or DC Universe action movie I usually go for something in the X-Men franchise. But Venom as a character who needs to feed off a component found in brains and chocolate to survive while inside a human shell is a pretty hard concept to pass up. Especially as Mother of Movies is a fan of darker and more violent films. And while the 2018 Venom movie didn’t tick all my boxes for an entertaining run time, “Venom: Let There Be Carnage” certainly did.
There is more heart to the story overall and, more steady punches of one-liners from the silver-toothed, long-tongued symbiote. Additionally, where the original movie was oversaturated with fight scenes, the 2021 movie release had just enough so that I didn’t get too bored. Venom 2 Trailer
My favorite kind of transhumanism, Venom sets the bar. Watch Infinite Summer for another take on this theme in a different context.
In case you live under a rock, the story for Venom 2 is about Eddie Brocks’s return to journalism. He is still suffering the depressive effects of his split from his girlfriend Anne. On top of that, he has come to something of a static state living with his alien counterpart. Venom wants more freedom and Eddie is now at a crossroads trying to keep his brain-eating inside demon satisfied.
There is also a good helping of backstory about Cletus Kasady as well. Brock has negotiated a short visit with the serial killer before his impending execution after being behind bars for some time. But when that goes horribly wrong. Cletus draws blood from a very surprised Eddie and, we learn that something so minor can have massive repercussions for the world.
But why is Venom 1 better than Venom Sequel?
For a start, the Venom sequel has more to give. The characters thrown into the mix include a girlfriend for Cletus called Frances who gives us a dynamic character arc. Especially once he inhales his new internal persona (Carnage) who can’t handle loud noise. Anne has moved on with a new lover giving us plenty of comedy when she gives Eddie the news of her impending nuptials. And lastly, the CGI is more than impressive in Let There Be Carnage due to some spectacular set designs including a church with stained glass windows, a nightclub, and lots of sky action with helicopters.

Venom 2 Post Credits
I love some post-credit information and Venom 2 has exactly that. Venom hints at future installments crossing over with Spiderman. As the symbiote with light years of knowledge, he shows our hero Eddie a glimpse into the future. And that future might include breaking the multiverse apart and entering the Spiderverse.
