Offseason Movie Explained 2022
Other movies by writer and director Mickey Keating like Darling, Carnage Park, and, Psychopaths haven’t faired too well in ratings. But each has a certain something and many horror fans want more of what this filmmaker has to offer. Offseason does have a certain charm. The fantasy and horror films pay homage to a wide range of well-known content.
The story is about Marie who gets a letter in the mail telling her she must get to Lone Palm Beach. Her mother’s grave has been desecrated and it’s imperative she comes quickly. She and her husband arrive only to discover the one bridge in and out of this waterside holiday destination is closed for the offseason.
You might think of the Silent Hill gaming franchise while watching Offseason thanks to a good helping of fog. There are scenes that cross into Lovecraftian territory both in the narrative of a small island being in debt to a puppetmaster demon. There is a quick glimpse into the price these people need to pay to stay on this island of heavenly promises when someone is pinned to a bed with tentacles coming out of every orifice. In addition, there is plenty of weird behavior from the community, This includes glowing eyes and finding people unmoving and still after being randomly placed somewhere in the background.
Is Offseason a Good Movie?
The film has a pretty good cast with Jocelin Donahue (The House of the Devil) and Joe Swanberg (You’re Nex) doing a bang-up job of asking stupid questions and looking totally freaked out from time to time. The aesthetic is its main drawcard as a slightly off-kilter holiday-inspired American Gothic horror. However, the Offseason film draws a blank when it comes to anything of substance. The surprises are bland if you could even call them surprises. We are told early on that there is a strange curse story that Marie has known about for some time. Her ignorance of the situation is waved away by the premise that it’s simply too crazy to be true.

What I did like was the final moments of the Offseason movie. There is something to be said about a self-aware hostage on a demon-possessed island. Especially one that doesn’t want anyone else to succumb to the same fate. Alongside a strong end to the narrative was also a fairly solid opening. We hear a lengthy monologue from Marie’s mother on her deathbed as she talks about life. As if in her final moments she decided to give herself some well-needed peace. However, she then discovers that what is waiting for her on the other side is not what she expected.

I also really liked the sound editing for Offseason. Between screeching winds and screaming voice-like background accents. I would recommend watching Offseason loud or with headphones.

Where to Watch Offseason 2022
Offseason 2022 movie streaming is available to rent until June 10th, 2022. From then it will be released onto the horror streaming platform Shudder in the U.S., Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand.

Offseason Explained
At the end of the film, the following exchange between Bridgeman and Marie explains the motivation of the demon in charge of the island. Everyone on the island is in a “dead state” during the colder months attributed to the Offseason. Any living person stupid enough to not heed the warnings of the Bridgman either by staying on the island or coming over to it (like Marie and George) will find themselves forever guests.
Marie’s mother ends up back on the island after passing due to her will having been altered. Her will declared that she be buried on the island.
Bridgeman: “Your mother did terrible things!”
Marie: “She didn’t do anything wrong!”
Bridgeman: “She left!”
