The Retaliators movie poster

If you’re looking for a metaphorical horror revenge movie rooted deep within a slow-moving narrative about trauma or some other hard-hitting theme, The Retaliators is not that movie. This is the type of horror movie, fans often say they want. With the recent success of films like Studio 666 (Foo Fighters), Lords of Chaos, Metal Lords, or even The Sound of Metal, there’s no denying that sometimes metal music and movies go well together. Suffice it to say though, this film is not high-brow storytelling. Nor is it particularly cohesive as far as how it travels along. But is it fun? Yes. Does it have beheadings, gore, torture, and pole dancing? Also yes. This is a film that you should go into expecting nothing but a good time with a pretty cool soundtrack.

I have to admit, the draw card for me was a plot with a priest at the helm. There is something about having a priest fight back against gangsters. It screams B-movie but still piques some interest in my horror heart. In “The Retaliators”, Bishop (Michael Lombardi) is hellbent on role modeling to his two young daughters that taking the high road is sometimes the most satiating way to live your life. That is, of course, until some sideways criminal decides to zip-tie your eldest daughter’s hands to the steering wheel. All because she saw what was inside the trunk of his car. This is where I personally wanted Bishop to go on a murderous rampage. However, instead, a rogue cop who thrives on revenge leads him down the darker path and pretty much takes the driver’s seat.

The sheer brilliance of the title lies in its ability to concoct a spine-chilling cauldron of various elements that horror aficionados simply crave. One cannot deny the unbridled excitement instilled by the appearance of the undead. Because let’s face it, who doesn’t like zombie flicks? In the atmospheric world of “The Retaliators,” the opening scenes deliver a palpable sense of impending doom, prompting even the most skeptical viewer to ponder the imminent arrival of a chilling apocalypse.

The opening scenes introduce campers who find themselves ensnared by seemingly mindless beings that bear an uncanny resemblance to zombies. But the truth behind their ghastly existence is unveiled in a climactic revelation that will leave you either over the moon or deeply disappointed.

Moreover, this blood-soaked tale is further amplified by the presence of well-known iconic musicians, ensuring an undeniable connection that resonates deep within the hearts of die-hard horror fans. “The Retaliators” is an absolute treasure trove of horror, destined to satiate the most ardent enthusiasts of the genre.
