Neon Lights Movie A Tech Tycoon’s Descent Into Madness

Neon Lights Poster

Released by Momentum Pictures on July 12th, 2022, NEON LIGHTS begins with a tycoon in the field of tech. However, Clay is suffering from some mental health problems and tucks himself away on a massive estate far away from anything that might bother him. His idea of a family reunion comes at a time that seems ill-fitting for someone unwell, but Clay wants to bury the hatchet, mend fences, and figure out a way to bring his nearest and dearest together.

He orchestrates extravagant dinners and enforces a collection of peculiar house rules. Clay masterfully crafts the atmosphere for the grand family reunion he envisions. Yet from the get-go, the air is tinged with an unmistakable strangeness. While guiding his siblings to their respective rooms, each space is awash in its unique hue of neon lighting. Adding to the mystery, the domestic staff Clay mentions is conspicuously invisible, and his advisor Denver (portrayed by Kim Coats) materializes sporadically to provide strategic counsel for Clay’s next maneuvers.

Neon Lights Film Review 2022

A stereotypical family group with Clay’s two brothers James and Benny the macho and taunting type. One is an ex-con and the other likes to snort drugs upon arrival. Benny’s wife Clarissa and their daughter Blair seem more enthusiastic about their impending stay. But then dinner is served which is when everything gets awkward. The more bickering and squabbling stirred up the more nervous Clay seems. And that’s when the murders start to happen. Neon Lights is a slasher movie with a mysterious crust.

There is a small amount of chatter about the movie Neon Lights. Mostly to do with the fact its narrative mirrors a more popular film in the way this title decides to wrap everything up. For the spoiler crowd, I’ve listed it in a sealed section at the end of the review. Throwing some attention to the on-screen visuals, I liked everything about how Neon Lights looks. A beautiful estate like this has a moody and fitting atmosphere, especially when you get the lighting and angles close to perfect.

Neon Lights Movie, A Different Kind of Slasher Film

However, Neon Lights is boring. There is no other way to put it. The first time I tried to watch the film, I fell asleep and blamed starting the film so late. On a second viewing, I still struggled to get to the end. The cohesiveness needed to pull off a story like this simply wasn’t there. With every pitchfork or stabbing, I became less and less invested.

That doesn’t mean everyone will feel the same way. As Digital Journal attests, Neon Lights is a high-adrenaline thriller. And despite my views on the movie, I appreciated the depiction of how mental health can be viewed through the eyes of the unwell. But as far as wanting to see it from their shoes in this way, I wasn’t a fan.

Neon Lights Movie Ending

Did you love the ending of the Neon Lights movie? Here’s another film just like it you can watch next.

Which Movie does the ending of Neon Lights closely resemble?

In the 2003 thriller “Identity” at the end of the film, it is revealed that each character is one of the murderer’s personas. Here in Neon Lights, the end of the film shows Clay returning to the office but looking in the rearview vision mirror and seeing Denver. It also clearly mixes in flashbacks that aren’t flashbacks at all and in fact, are shown to be memories of Clay’s time in a mental institution.
