I’m making my way through all the Escape Room movies I can get my hands on. For this Escape Room review, I stepped out and went to Gold Class at Event Cinemas because I’m fancy (not really, tickets were on special.) This particular film grossed $155.2 million from a budget of just USD 9 million so it couldn’t of been that bad right? I’m also going to talk you through why Escape Room 2019 in particular, was rated R, and why I liked it. I think a movie about trying to escape a room, box, or something else square in nature is a pretty good premise.

Escape Room 2 Release Date

Escape Room 2 was due for release in 2020. Due to all things COVID, the new release date for Escape Room 2 will hit US cinemas on January 1, 2021. In the UK, Escape Room 2, the sequel, was in cinemas on January 29, 2021.

Escape Room 2 will again have Adam Robitel sitting in the director’s chair. That being said, the writer will be the same and Bragi F. Schut is back without co-writer Maria Melnik this time.

I’ve seen all the escape room movies. Mother of Movies wrote about an Escape Room vs Escape Room. Two identical titles were released in 2017. In addition, there was No Escape Room. In terms of storyline, quality, and fluidity this Escape Room 2019 is the best of the lot. As for originality, none of them are winners. For 2020 Will Wernick released a new horror movie called Follow Me. Check out all the reviews below.

Is Escape Room 2019 Rated R?

Nope, this film was branded with a PG-13 label. There is a small amount of language and a conversation or two about whether or not people in the group are ‘doing it.’ There is a hint of boobies from a low-cut shirt. Of course, it wouldn’t be a perilous death trap maze if there wasn’t violence, death, and carnage. Although there is a decent helping of all those things, most of it happens off-screen.

“Hear Ye, Hear Ye, from this day forth.. any movie that includes puzzle-solving in any way shall be a Saw rip-off.”

Mother of Movies

Any movie. Or a rip-off of Cube.

I’d rather describe similar storylines as a favorable nod to popular film culture. Yes, you will be reminded of Saw. And yes you might also think of Final Destination and Hostel too. However, the Escape Room movie for 2019 did not repeat any of the puzzles that went before it. Did Escape Room mimic any of those other films as a whole? Again, no. It added some really cool additional elements to those very formulaic and far-reaching franchises.

I have no issues with generic ideas used as a springboard for new films. It happens in every aspect of life. Very rarely are there truly unique ideas that no one has ever done before so why poo-poo something just because it gives a nod to something else we liked? Smart films do it all the time and critics gush about it. Rant over.

Who Dies in this Death Trap Movie? – The Bodycount

In this version of the ever-popular setting of an escape room, there was the refreshing element that at least everyone had a purpose. No one was there against their will. It wasn’t anyone’s birthday and everyone wanted a piece of the money pie offered to the winner. In this case, most were lured there for financial gain, but they were all smart in one way or another. Overall the setup was good and also plausible.

The dialogue went from outstanding in some parts to a bit wobbly in others. Generally, though, I’d have to give it a thumbs up plus I didn’t find any of the cast annoying as I have done in previous films. There were lots of ‘quotes’ and symbolic social references which, for me just can’t be underdone in movies like this.

Sorry, I Didn’t Hate It

How hard must it be to think up new puzzles though? I was really pleased with how everything tied into the overall storyline. The end sequences would have to be the messiest thing about the movie overall. Like an unnecessary afterthought that was not required.

Although, there are some unhappy campers around (based on star ratings I glanced at.) I have to say Escape Room 2019 — it’s not too shabby at all.
