Despite the derivative nature of The Visitor, this is a title that gives you what you want. If that is, you are looking for a movie with simmering secrecy wrapped up in ancestral patriarchy. Director of 2018’s The Dark, Justin P. Lange checks in with a well-written ode to all things mysterious horror and settles in with Robert and his wife returning to her hometown. The hometown returns are always fought with turmoil on the silver screen and The Visitor submerges itself into that adage.
Robert discovers a painting in his new home and is troubled to find the man in the picture looks exactly like him. He points it out to his wife who simply fobs him off. But other strange things occur while he is out and about in town. Women seem to ogle him. What’s more, he gets a rather intense warning from a shop owner about returning to England as soon as he can. The more he finds out about this man in the paintings, who isn’t just in his own house but all around town, the more he wants to find out. But the people who seem to be trying to help him turn up dead or simply disappear.
Making a Deal With the Devil
Writers Adam Mason and Simon Boyes drum up a sharp and twisted narrative. Even though we’ve seen this done before; a good story is a good story and this one rolls through the motions like a well-oiled machine. Casting is kept to a minimum with Robert played by Finn Jones (Game of Thrones) and his wife Maia by Jessica McNamee (The Meg.) Alongside a few townsfolk and a jovial but menacing religious man the whole story is thrown slightly off-kilter as Robert becomes enmeshed in what’s happening in the town.
Usually, in stories like this, it’s the wife who finds herself locked away from prying eyes and quickly impregnated under close watch. Here in The Visitor, it’s Robert running around and talking to the townspeople as his wife succumbs to the comforts of home never saying a word about anything she might know.
By the end of The Visitor, lots of information is dished out about the man in the paintings. Robert finds out all of the town’s secrets with plenty of time to save himself. But can he in light of the fact he has a son on the way? The film’s saving grace is that by the time the audience is privvy to what Robert is up against, the outcome has already been decided.

The Visitor Movie Explained
Ending Explained for The Visitor 2022
“The Visitor: historically was a man who saved the town Maia was born in. Maxwell Braun explained that he was a figure that points to several End of Days scenarios that the world would rather forget. It turns out that Maia is actually The Visitor’s daughter and that Robert was kidnapped and hidden away in England.
The Visitor Movie, What Happened to the Baby?
This makes Robert and Maia brother and sister. She was told by her father to retrieve him so that the family’s lineage could be continued the way it was meant to be. Once an heir is born, the baby and the mother (Maia) are essentially put on ice. Then the Visitor can complete his final mission, and once dead, his son will take up the position. Essentially, it can be assumed he is the Devil and throughout history, he has produced an heir to continue his historical crimes in the future. This makes him immortal in a way.
