It Follows, Astonishingly Good Horror Review & Explanation

“It Follows” is a critically acclaimed film with an excellent reputation for the horror genre. While some argue that It Follows lacks originality, this movie stands out as a rare movie gem. It has successfully blended elements from various sources, without compromising its eerie atmosphere and distinct style.

While the concept of a curse being passed on is not entirely novel, “It Follows” approaches it in a way that feels fresh and innovative. The film jams in elements that horror enthusiasts love. Death curse movies done well know how to create the perfect recipe for suspense, mystery, and fear. This cult movie favorite manages to encompass all these elements without being overwhelmed or weighed down by them.

In this instance, let’s tip our respect hat, firstly, to David Robert Mitchell and his talent and secondly to the movie itself.

Horror Movies With Curses

“It Follows” movie starts with Jay and her new boyfriend going all the way for the first time. In what would have to be one of the scariest, nail-biting scenes in anyone’s top ten, her man Hugh then tells her he has passed her a lovely present. Hugh goes to lengths to explain the rules of the death curse. The lore is simple. Once she starts seeing the result of this curse, to get rid of it, Jay needs to pass it on too. Subsequently, she needs to have sex with someone else.

The curse is some kind of entity that takes the form of whatever it chooses and hunts the cursed one. If it catches up to you, you die. Horribly.

What is the Best Scary Movie?

It Follows horror movie is the type of teen angst movie you go looking for when you feel like watching something in the realm of “Truth or Dare (2018).” It takes the premise of knowing there is something after you and makes it work. You can see it coming, lurking, and catching up at all times and that is plenty scary. That’s why I think a movie like this sets the bar for others like it.

This film doesn’t rely on jump-scares and while I have nothing against them, I would prefer to watch a film that paralyzes me throughout than see the willful setup for predictable tension. The ending of It Follows did cause some conjecture among horror fans, however, I liked that too.

Cast Of It Follows Stars Maika Monroe

Despite not being well-known at the time, each actor delivers a remarkable performance that adds depth and authenticity to the story. Maika Monroe shines as Jay, portraying her character with subtlety and nuance, effectively conveying her emotions of enthusiasm, tiredness, and fear. With a small group of characters, it becomes easier to form connections with them, which enhances investment. It’s refreshing to see that Greg’s motivations go beyond simply being a killer. His complex persona and possible long-time love for Jay add another layer of depth to the story, making it more than just a typical slasher film. It’s this attention to character development that sets this movie apart from others in its genre.

One aspect that sets “It Follows” apart is its haunting soundtrack. Although reminiscent of certain compositions from other films, it contributes greatly to the overall atmosphere and enhances the viewing experience. The music intensifies the tension and adds a layer of unease to every scene. The music can’t be overlooked either when it comes to talking about this great film. All the tracks are from Disasterpeace an American composer Richard Vreeland. He is behind the scores from films like Under the Silver Lake and the animated series Bad Jubies.

Overall, this is a film for people who love the unexplained mystery of a presence in a movie. Where it came from or why it was there is never elaborated on. For film lovers who love that incessant battle to survive against something that could never be stopped, this will tick those boxes.

Cinephiles who love titles with forces that can’t be killed and instead need to be dealt with or managed or captured will feel excited at their feeble attempts to do just that. If you were ever cursed by it, there is a high likelihood it will be back at some point as the curse reverts to the previously infected if successful. Just to keep you on your toes and rooting for a survivor.

The mystery of this curse also lies in why the thing chooses to take the form of people known to the victim of the person it is hunting. In the It Follows ending, the entity chooses Jay’s dad. For me, this was simply about letting the victim know they were back in the game. Earlier, it chooses a replica of Greg and then Greg’s mom, how would you know who it wanted otherwise? How the creature kills you is also a mystery. You’d have to assume it was strong, violent, and not very nice. Why did it break the girl’s leg? Because it wanted to, that’s why. And that’s cool. Unpredictable is scary too.

People were hung up on the creature being able to be slowed down by barriers, guns, walls, etc. The key here is ‘slowed down,’ not stopped. Just because it’s not shown, doesn’t mean it’s not explained. Just because you didn’t see it walk through walls, get around barriers, and heal itself, doesn’t mean it can’t. I think it just means you can decide on what you think enables the creature to keep on catching up to you, know where you are, and follow you until you die. You can also be scared of the things you don’t know about it. The It Follows ending is a fantastic way to end a great film.

Will There Be an It Follows 2?

So many movies need a sequel. But does the It Follows horror movie require more and should it get a sequel? In my humble opinion, I liked the ending of this classic horror hit. I liked that It Follows didn’t churn out more films of the same ilk. Would I like to see an It Follows 2? Sure, but it doesn’t require it.
