Frost poster

Frost is simply not a good movie. Under normal circumstances, I can list a fairly solid collection of positives about any movie I watch. Frost, however, is not one of them. Under the banner of “Based on Real Events,” the narrative is definitely simple. Simple doesn’t always guarantee an easy win though. I will give credit where credit is due and give kudos to the cinematography. The cinematography and location were an asset to the film overall. I’d like to add the effects were okay but when you use soap suds as snow, it’s not a winner for me.

Frost begins with a woman called Abby. She drives to her estranged father’s cabin. Abby is heavily pregnant and looking for some kind of reconnection. There is a small amount of backstory with Dad, Frank, drinking a large glass of scotch at dinner and a short conversation about him still liking the bottle. It’s obvious that whatever happened in their past might be rectified by some time together. At least they’re both trying and so, the two make plans to go fishing the following day. This is where the entirety of the Frost movie comes undone.

Plausibility is an important factor if invested in true story narratives. I can forgive the odd horror trope. Quite often the stereotypical dumb character and their subsequent decision-making can be overlooked too. Especially when it accentuates an already entertaining feature. But sometimes these factors combined with terrible pacing and a lack of care for the details make a movie unbearable. Unfortunately, that’s what happened here for me. The two load themselves into their car with Abby asking her (alcoholic) father to drive. They pack absolutely nothing except a nice bucket of worms and speed off down the road.

How Much Frost Is There Really?

It doesn’t take long before Dad and his crappy driving careen the car off the road into a ditch. When they wake up, Abby has been slightly impaled by a tree branch, and both are stuck in their seat belts. They try a few different things to get free before a lightbulb flashes for Abby and she reaches for the cigarette lighter. Now if you are lucky enough to own a car that still has a cigarette lighter in it, you know the ones with the little coils, they aren’t really good for much other than actually igniting a smoke. Now Abby’s car must have some sort of technologically advanced cigarette lighter in it because this thing can melt through seatbelts. Not just one seat belt either but two in a row without needing to be reheated.

Rather than wait with his pregnant daughter Frank trots off into the snow-covered mountains to find help. This is after telling her the worst of the storm is yet to come and that she will probably perish if the sun goes down and she can’t stay warm. Just what anyone in dire need of medical attention, about to have a baby, and stuck in a vehicle needs to hear.

Luckily for Abby, he leaves her one-half of a pair of walkie-talkies. She does try to use it to talk to her dad only to be told to pipe down and save the battery. So Abby turns on the heater and plays herself some relaxing music to wait out her rescue time in the car.

Within a very short time and before a day has even passed, the red flags upon which the rest of the movie is strung out present themselves. Abby is ravishingly hungry and decides that the delicious worms that were supposed to dangle upon the end of a fishing hook will do well enough for an afternoon snack. She eagerly puts her teeth around a dirty live worm and gobbles it up.

It only gets worse from there. Not only does the Frost movie painstakingly force us to listen to Abby endlessly grunt and shiver but between stitching herself up and being stalked by a wolf she goes into labor. Will she be rescued in time for herself and her baby to survive? You’ll have to watch Frost for yourself. But for those who can’t be bothered, see below for a brief summary of the gross ending the filmmakers, Brandon Slagle decided to add after all that we endured before it.

Ending of Frost? What Does Abby Do?

Ending of Frost 2022

At the end of Frost, after Abby goes into labor and she has survived almost everything that was thrown at her, she eats her own baby. The act is shown in graphic detail too. Not something you see every day in movies, but still somewhat unwelcome.
