Adult Swim The Fire Place

Adult Swim Yule Log aka The Fireplace is a movie that is well under the radar. On the surface, the title and cover poster suggests this is just a video of a crackling Christmas fire. Something that the film trailer also encapsulates and was used to spur on the secretive film when it appeared on YouTube. Casper Kelly’s (Mandy, Too Many Cooks), the off-the-wall film is a hard narrative to describe.

There is so much going on. It’s something like if “The Strangers” were red-necks on a rampant killing spree and they entered the universe where killer “Slaxx” and “Killer Sofas” could happily coexist on a level playing field with time travel and a Devil that wanted to erase your existence.

The absurd but riveting “Adult Swim Yule Log” opens with a fireplace view. A mother and son are present after a very recent murder. By the time they clean up and find somewhere to safely hide out, a tense pair of lovers turn up for a weekend in what we are told is an Airbnb.

The couple, Zoe and Alex get comfortable with some wine, hang out on the bear-skinned rug, and sit in front of the fire. When Alex proposed on a bent knee, there was tension instead of delight. Trouble is brewing in paradise. A knock at the door provides a sheriff and his Deputy. The two warn the couple about a murderer on the loose. What they also tell them is that the firewood they are using is cursed and that they should discontinue enjoying its flickering comfort.

The chaos commences when a small group of UFO podcasters also arrive at the accommodation. Similarly to the dark and twisted Gone in the Night (starring Winona Ryder) and Barbarian, the two groups discover they have double-booked the cabin. This booking is for the exact same dates. Zoe ends up hitting a dead end trying to contact the owners. They all settle in for the night.

You might think “The Fireplace” is about to become monotonous due to lengthy conversations. Then, a gentleman named Isaac takes the initiative to retreat to the upper floor for a refreshing shower. In our initial encounter with the menacing Yule log, Isaac experiences a rather gruesome demise. The special effects, although employing noticeable CGI, are quite impressive, instantly capturing my attention and leaving me eager to discover the other surprises that the film holds in store.

There are loads to like about The Fireplace 2022. Alex played by Justin Miles shone the brightest as a well-meaning all round nice guy. Performances overall were excellent. There is just something cool about a floating log on fire, that just wants to smash your face in. The backstories told via a demon in the fireplace were a neat idea that added another element of intense chaos to the mix. However, I thought it worked seamlessly into the turn of events and made the nonsense seem more cohesive. What’s more, a catchy tune in the credits also written by Casper Kelly gave me a chuckle after the finale.
