Who Killed Santa? A Murderville Murder Mystery

I’ve never seen an episode of Murderville, a series that hosts one season streaming on Netflix. The premise is simple. Will Arnett is the show’s host, the same actor who appears in Who Killed Santa as Detective Terry Seattle. Each week a guest celebrity joins the cast of what is essentially an impromptu mystery murder narrative. The cast is peppered with big-name actors and actresses. If you’re looking for a movie with Jason Bateman, Who Killed Santa has him in a central role.

He is one of two people not graced with a script. Instead, Bateman (Ozark) and Maya Rudolph (Liquorice Pizza) are the two improvisers for the film. Also along for the ride is Pete Davison (although he doesn’t bring anything to his scene.) Sean Hayes (Will and Grace), Kurt Braunohler (The Big Sick) Eliza Coupe (Happy Endings), and a slew of other recognizable faces try to figure out who the murderer is.

Regardless, this is not high-brow humor. It’s the foolish bottom-of-the-bucket-silly type of comedy. I found myself laughing despite thinking this way. Watching Jason Bateman introduce himself as a former actor to Terry Seattle as he is shown how to be a good detective was a great start. Straight to business, Detective Terry has Bateman dressed in an elf costume to blend into the festivities at a department store.

Santa Gets Shivved With a Candy Cane In This Movie

There are plenty of missed opportunities with the cast breaking character and some ancient lousy jokes thrown into the mix. In one example, Santa has been stabbed and Detective Terry advised Jason Batement to give him mouth-to-mouth. The moment Bateman leans in, Santa comes alive trying to roll away from him to avoid it. In another scene, a sports star is being interviewed and acts like he’s in the locker room, disrobing while being questioned. The laughs are a little hit-and-miss. But that’s generally the case for comedy films.

“Who Killed Santa?” A Murderville Murder Mystery will be a hit for some and a massive fail for others. The title has enjoyed almost rave reviews since its release on the Netflix streaming platform on December 15th, 2022. The Who Killed Santa? the Christmas movie is sitting at 6.5/10 on movie review aggregator IMBd.com and has an 84% satisfaction rating on Rotten Tomatoes. So if you’re looking for something a little silly in the spirit of Christmas, you’ll only lose 52 minutes of your life watching this comedy and mystery movie.
