Natalie Martinez Into the Dark 2019

Directed by Daniel Stamm, the episode “Down” is part of the anthology series “Into the Dark” on Hulu. Stamm is no stranger to mesmerizing audiences with his work, having directed notable films like “13 Sins” (2014), the TV series adaptation of “Scream,” and “The Last Exorcism” (2010). While the direction of “Down” is undoubtedly solid, this particular installment gave way to mixed feelings. Nevertheless, as a genre film version of the classic rock song, Love in an Elevator, episode 5 of season 1 has all the right ingredients to satisfy most.

Lots of people can relate to the feeling of being invisible. None more it seems than Guy. His work as a security guard has left him with feelings of insecurity over time and compounded the effects of how he feels about himself. His cool and composed demeanor at work, however, hides dark thoughts and a progressive sense of abandonment from the people around him.

In S01 E05 Down of “Into the Dark” horror anthology series two coworkers find themselves stranded in an elevator over Valentine’s Day weekend. When one thing leads to another while they pass the time waiting to be rescued, one of them takes a dark turn.

Valentine’s Day Horror Movie – “Down 2019”

V is For Valentine’s Day by the way…

However, you really can watch this one any old time. I mean, movies with the theme of love can be enjoyed all year round. But if you are looking for Valentine’s Day horror-themed movies to watch, this is a safe bet. Martinez does a great job being sexy and likable. Her love in an elevator co-star Matt Luria is understandably upset when he realizes the feelings he shares for his most recent lover aren’t reciprocated.

Hulu Shows in the Theme of Horror

Sometimes filmmakers utilize societal norms when it comes to dynamics of this sort. For a man to be rejected by a woman or vice versa, the make-up department tries to uglify good-looking people. Fortunately, Down 2019 not only flips the script when it comes to what’s fair in love and war but generates unpredictability by wrapping up the broken-hearted trauma in a very good-looking man. Despite early thoughts that someone who looks like Matt Luria couldn’t possibly be invisible in his line of work and must get hit on a lot, I realized one thing. Anyone can succumb to insecurities that lead to a whole lot of trouble.

Neither his job nor his face would be hard to miss. What the creators did later though is what I like to refer to as inconsistent personality disorder. It happens a lot in horror stories and usually more towards characters who hold positions with titles like ‘scientist’ or ‘doctor’ who suddenly seem to have hit their heads off-camera and act as dumb as a box of rocks. In this case, Guy actually does have a head wound so I will let it slide just this once. One minute he is fairly crafty and level-headed and then all of a sudden he’s way too gullible for what the story just built up.

Down 2019 Movie Review

Another highlight of the movie is that most people enjoy a single-location horror. There are so many good ones to choose from that I’m always amazed filmmakers can get it so right. Just think “Misery”, “The Green Room”, and of course, “Cube” and you’ll start ticking off a long list. In this case, I loved the way the episode was handled. I also loved the performances of the four cast members within it. The atmospheric tension was great and I’m glad they didn’t try and kill us with elevator music.

I’m still giving props to the series overall despite the trash talk on the series as a whole from critics and user reviews. Not from me though. I love this show.
