The GoldSmith 2023

Directed by Vincenzo Ricchiuto The GoldSmith was released on the 3rd of October 2023 through Cinephobia Releasing. An Italian-language home invasion horror, the title sees three career criminals set a plan in motion. Geovanna (Stefania Casisi, Suspira) and Antonio (Guiseppe Pambieri) don’t seem the type to keep such a big secret. They live modestly but the trio, all friends since childhood seem to think, the elderly couple has a secret lab full of jewelry.

Drawing parallels to other home-invasion movies like “The Panic Room” or “Breaking In“, The Goldsmith makes it difficult for the would-be burglars to get the job done. Geovanna and Antonio might be guilty of excellent skills in running an underground jewelry-making business, but are they really as innocent as they seem? Now with the trespassers who threaten their peace locked safely away, what do Antonio and Geovanna plan to do?

THE GOLDSMITH: Evil has never been so alluring. Can you handle the horror?

Separated by a large metal door, Stefano, Roberto, and Arianna face off through a security video with Antonio. I found this narrative shift a highlight of The GoldSmith. The characters became engaging as more details came to light and the power transfer between the two groups created enough tension to carry lengthy conversation. What they didn’t become was a group I really invested in. I did like the subtle disclosures about who Geovnna and Antonio were as a couple, though. Despite never fully divulging how his gruesome past got started, the dialogue points toward a very solid pairing.

“The Goldsmith” is a horror film that intertwines a mixture of suspense, gore, and fantastical elements, culminating in a visually twisted and over-the-top final act. While it may deviate from the typical horror tropes and go to extreme lengths, it manages to mostly deliver. It may leave some viewers slightly disappointed, yet others exhilarated.

The film’s director, Stewart Thorndike, crafts a narrative that progressively builds tension, reaching a crescendo in the climactic finale. Although some viewers may find the storyline to be far-fetched, it is precisely this departure from common plots that sets “The Goldsmith” apart and gives it a unique but bloody charm.

In terms of horror tropes, “The Goldsmith” takes an unconventional approach. Rather than relying on traditional scares and jump scares, the film immerses the audience in a world of twisted gore and psychological torment. It engrosses viewers in a gradual descent into madness, as the protagonist is confronted with unimaginable horrors that seem to surpass the boundaries of reality.

Delving Into the Twisted Horrors of “The Goldsmith”

The visual aesthetics of “The Goldsmith” play a pivotal role in enhancing the overall viewing experience. The cinematography, combined with meticulously crafted sets and practical effects, creates an atmosphere that effectively draws viewers into the nightmarish world depicted on screen. From grotesque disfigurements to atmospheric lighting, it’s easy to see that every element was carefully considered.

For those seeking a film that pushes the boundaries of horror and embraces the bizarre, “The Goldsmith” is certain to deliver. Its unabashed stranglehold of twisted gore and its departure from standard horror tropes make it a unique and memorable cinematic experience. Although it may not be everyone’s cup of tea, those who can appreciate its audacity will be rewarded with a journey into the darkest recesses of the human psyche.

Ultimately, “The Goldsmith” stands as a testament to the brazen creativity and fearlessness of director Stewart Thorndike. It may not be for the faint of heart, but for those who love dipping their toes into the softer side of extreme horror, it offers a tantalizing and unsettling experience. So steel yourself for a twisted journey and watch it, if you like a great movie ending.
