The Room 2021 Delivers A Lethal Booking Error During A Storm
The Room 2021 (translated to La Stanza and also known as The Guest Room) is a psychological thriller that was released on Digital HD & Cable VOD on October 25, 2022. Directed and written by Stefano Lodovichi (The Deep Wood) the title with Italian roots, had an internet release in its home country back in 2021. The film kicks off in an isolated house with a woman seen standing on a window ledge wearing a wedding dress.
Close to dawn, a stranger turns up in the middle of a raging storm. He bangs on the door dripping wet. The woman still in her wedding dress, with mascara running down her face opens it just a little. He tells her he has an outstanding booking inside the hotel. Despite the woman, Stella’s, insistence that the hotel is no longer operating, the man says there has been some kind of mistake. He puts his foot in the door and pleads his case. In his obscurity and apparent willingness to leave, she lets him in to give him a glass of water.
The Room Requires a Reservation
Once inside, the more the man speaks the more he seems too familiar with both the hotel and Stella. However, she sets up his bedding, gets changed, and continues to wait on this guest. At the mention of her husband, Sandro, who will be along soon to sort out the mistake, she seems to let her guard down. As the two wait for Sandro to arrive, the audience is shown various things the man already knows about the guest house along with the contents of his suitcase. All the things this mysterious man does are suspicious at best.
But his friendly demeanor keeps Stella calm though easily startled and wary. His ominous presence is mildly offputting. So are his claims of being a man in need of a room which slowly dissipates when Sandro does indeed arrive. At this point we learn that the man’s name is Giulio and Sandro doesn’t know him either.
The Room 2021 Review
Performances in The Room 2021 authenticate everything that happens with the trio and the result is a captivating watch. The setting of the home became an asset to the film overall as the narrative begins to unleash its secrets. Giulio (Guido Caprino) holds together the very foundation required to float a story like this. He tiptoes around why and what Stella and Sandro have kept from each other while dropping in evidence of the very demons he also has to deal with. Themes of abandonment, love, family, and rejection are flouted like the thunder and lightning that began as the backdrop of the movie.
Light on the horror themes The Guest Room purports to have, there is still enough substance and heart to this title. It could easily be a title you could watch again.
