I am a huge fan of movies starring Nicholas Cage. His presence alone guarantees an entertaining experience, even if the movie itself might not be a masterpiece. “The Retirement Plan” movie boasts an impressive cast. Alongside Cage (“60 Seconds”) are Ron Perlman (Hellboy) and Ashley Greene (Twilight Franchise). While the film’s plot falls into the realm of absurdity and action, it does not quite achieve the level of comedy it strives for.
Picture a story where a damsel in distress is linked to their savior. This link is through a retired assassin who happens to be a family member. Additionally, the element of double-crossing was added to the narrative template. Of course, the double cross, which is a standard in most action flicks, is twofold here. In The Retirement plan, even the double-crossers are double-crossed.
If you’ve seen the movie trailer for The Retirement Plan, all the best parts of the story are in it. Unless you’ve never seen an action movie, anything I’ve said so far can’t be considered a spoiler.
The Retirement Plan Movie Summary
Ashley and her daughter Sarah are targeted by a ruthless crime syndicate. With nowhere else to turn, Ashley contacts her estranged father Matt (Nicolas Cage), a laid-back island recluse with a deadly past as an assassin. As danger escalates, Matt goes rogue to protect his family, but the film’s pacing may leave viewers snoozing before the bullets fly.
“Are you rich?”
“That depends on your persepective. If I can afford this breakfast, and you can’t that makes me rich.”
Matt (Nicolas Cage) talking to Sarah (Thalia Campbell) quote from the movie The Retirement Plan.
Nicolas Cage, Movies that Won’t Give You a Heart Attack
The villains that are thrown into the mix perfectly align with the laid-back atmosphere that emanates from every scene. It’s the kind of action movie you can watch without your heart rate going up. What’s more, there isn’t much investment required in caring about the majority of the character’s well-being. The background stories of the key cast members didn’t do much to make me root for them.
Despite the generic nature of the production, the movie is entertaining. The Retirement Plan gives the impression that a group of cool guys got together and made a film on a beautiful island. In reality, entertainment news reported Ron Perlman and Nic Cage took on their respective roles just to hang out and the cherry on top is they got paid to do so.
What sets The Retirement Plan apart is its understated charm and clever dialogue that keeps you engaged throughout. Each character brings a unique twist to their archetypal roles, with the main antagonist, Donnie, relentlessly pursuing Ashley, leading to a cat-and-mouse chase confined to the small island. One standout performance comes from Bobo, portrayed by the brilliant Ron Perlman, who effortlessly steals the show and remains a personal favorite till the very end.
Sarah: “Why did you wanna be the bad guy?”
Bobo: “I’ve never really thought about it. I’ve just been the bad guy from the beginning. Circumstances, I guess.”
Ron Perlman quote in The Retirement Plan
What to watch next?
Senior Year is streaming, you could watch that next. All the feel good feelings and none of the crime or Cage.
