The film There’s Something in the Barn is a title that cinephiles looking for the newest Christmas horror movie were excited to see release. But if you’re looking for the serious tonal underbelly required to make a film like this work, you might find yourself more than a little disappointed. This is a Christmas horror movie that never overreaches when it comes to being too silly. But nor does it deliver the tension and scares required to make this a movie to recommend.
There’s Something in the Barn does a really good job of creating a heartwarming story that revolves around the bond between family members. However, this skewed backbone of emotional aesthetics alongside the childish and immature gags causes a slight disconnect. While the title and idea initially draw you into the narrative, a lot of the film is simply too annoyingly low-brow. Additionally, this is a Christmas horror movie that could have benefited from a much shorter run-time.

The violent R-rated Christmas movie follows Bill, his new wife Amrita, and their children Nora and Lucas. After the tragic loss of a family member, they decided to relocate to Norway. Determined to start afresh, they embark on the ambitious project of converting their newly inherited property into a charming bed and breakfast. During the renovations, the family stumbles upon an unexpected presence residing in their barn—a friendly and helpful elf named Kiran. As they interact with Kiran, they quickly realize that he holds a deep connection to the property and the surrounding land.
Thrilled by Kiran’s willingness to assist them, Bill and his family gladly accept his support. They become committed collaborators, working together to preserve the property’s natural beauty while respecting the elf’s wishes: no major alterations, no bright lights, and no loud disturbances. As Bill, Amrita, Nora, and Lucas bond with Kiran, they not only develop a deep appreciation for his magical assistance but also gain valuable insights into the rich folklore and traditions of Norway. The elf’s presence infuses their bed and breakfast with an enchanting aura, attracting guests who wouldn’t normally have visited otherwise.
Barn Elf Rules
- No major Improvements to the property
- Don’t make too much noise
- No bright lights
The pacing of the film is slow. There’s Something in the Barn that broaches the 2-hour mark and it takes forever for things to get appropriately messy. The Christmas Elf movie provides a prologue that teases high-impact scenes, but these don’t come in soon enough to maintain interest in seeing the title through to the end. The deaths that take place are limited to side characters who visit the bed and breakfast and so the degree of concern is simply not there. Consequently, sucking the suspense right out is instead the idea that this family is not under threat of murder by elf.
On the upside, there are some great performances in “There’s Something in the Barn.” These horror movie actors and actresses cement the ideology that the narrative proposed probably sounded like a good idea on paper.
Martin Starr (who plays Bill) is known for starring in titles like “Freaks and Geeks.” Mom Carol is played by Amrita Acharia who is better known for her role in “Game of Thrones.” On top of that, Eldar Vågan has the role of Erik and ties into the film’s Norwegian background as being a well-known Norwegian songwriter and guitarist.
It’s also worth mentioning the Killer Elf movie has a great production design. Horror movies set in snowy climates make for excellent visuals and There’s Something in the Barn has that in spades. Bright colors, neon lights, and twinkling trees are a brilliant platform for blood-spattered snow. With cheerful background and music, when the shit finally hits the proverbial fan, gore-hounds will delight in the holiday-themed red-washed snow. The final quarter is a ballistic bloodthirsty conclusion that many who watch this to the end will completely appreciate.
There’s Something in the Barn Trailer
A movie that feels inspired by iconic horror films like “Gremlins” with creatures that have rules on how they need to be treated. Here, there are murderous elves with a Jekyll and Hyde personas underpinning a familiar story. With jokes that could be considered cringe-inducing, “There’s Something in the Barn” is easy on the eyes but leaves something to be desired.
