Damsel, Hot On Netflix & Has Redeeming Qualities

Damsel Poster 2024

The classic fairytale story of a rich and well-known Prince requesting the hand of an unknown woman in a random modest family has been well rehearsed. But who says you can’t have fun with well-known folk tales? Damsel, as a result, is a dark fantasy movie that completely confirms that I have a thing for films that put their best female empowerment foot forward. In Damsel 2024, a King and his men storm an underground cave system housing a local, dragon. After killing all of the King’s soldiers, the King begs for his life.

Damsel is a cinematic experience that may not be everyone’s cup of tea, particularly if subpar CGI is a deal-breaker for you. That said, the dragon’s close-up shots are quite impressive. However, it’s important to note that the film does suffer from occasional lapses in spatial coordination and some less-than-stellar effects during an early action sequence.

Fortunately for this title, Damsel has a great cast. Damsel is full of actors and actresses who are very qualified for any role they take. The focus remains heavily on its lead Millie Bobby Brown and she has enough conviction to carry most of the stodgy middle. When the story turns sharply into the future, the narrative introduces an Inophean family whose people are in famine and an Aurean Prince who wants to save them. While being courted, both are certain their fortune and saviors have arrived.

Damsel in Distress

Millie Bobby Brown leans into a familiar heroine character only this time she gets to do it with long brown hair and wearing pretty dresses. She does it well here in Damsel and as a fan of Stranger Things, the movie was already winning when I noted the remaining cast. Despite the remaining members lacking the same amount of screen time, each was interesting enough to be both memorable and fun to watch.

Nick Robinson’s Prince Harry was a vivid character with plenty to love. Displaying an emotional rollercoaster of faces, his story arc was super fun. Ray Winstone (Jawbone) shines in his role as a dad who did his daughter dirty and his screen time was optimally utilised. Angela Bassett (Passion Fish) was given just enough material to remain a likable side character that you probably want to stay alive. Suffice it to say, this palatable combination of clever casting and flavourful personalities takes Damsel to a place of enjoyable satisfaction.

Conjured up from a novel of the same name, The Hollywood Reporter website talked about the process of book to film in an extensive article. There has been much debate about the difference in ending between the book and the movie however there is not much between them.

Damsel Parent Guide

The following comments about Damsel 2024 contain spoilers and explain some plot points of the film.

“Damsel,” now streaming on Netflix, made quite the commotion upon its release in early March 2024, eliciting a healthy dose of opposing reactions. Despite a lukewarm reception from critics, as reflected by its average rating of 56% on Rotten Tomatoes and 46% on Metacritic, the film has sparked plenty of animated discussions both for and against the Netflix original title.

Movies On Netflix With Torture

Damsel is a hard sell when it comes to what’s in store for who to watch this with. The title has a Pg-13 rating and cites strong violence. The action sequences with the dragon are on the not-so-nice side of life, with the giant beast squashing quite a few soldiers. Not only that, but Damsel could be a little stressful for teens during its last quarter. There are some scenes where Elodi’s father is tortured as a lure to entice the young princess out of hiding in the caves. The dragon eventually kills her father with his claws, puncturing him and squashing him slowly.

The ending of The Damsel movie sees the Dragon fly in and incinerate the Aurean families and the castle’s residents. In the book, Elodi offers a chance to live if they confess to their crimes or die by the flames of the dragon.

Aside from some more mature themes, there are also visceral shots with burns to arms and legs, CGI blood spray, and effects.
