Terrifier 3 trilogy review

Terrifier 3 was always set to be a blood-soaked thrill ride. It will hit Australian cinemas on October 10, 2024. Umbrella Entertainment is distributing the film. Horror maestro Damien Leone is directing it. This latest installment promised to push the boundaries of terror even further.

The journey began with the original Terrifier (2016). It was inspired by Leone’s 2011 short film and the horror anthology All Hallows’ Eve. In that film, Art the Clown unleashed his gruesome mayhem on unsuspecting victims during Halloween night. Despite mixed reviews, it quickly garnered a cult following, thanks in large part to David Howard Thornton’s chilling performance. Who could forget that unforgettable splitting scene?

Following up, Terrifier 2 (2022) brought Art back for another brutal killing spree, becoming a box office sensation. This sequel was lauded for its improved narrative and even more shocking gore, solidifying Art the Clown as a modern horror icon.

With Terrifier 3, Damien Leone aimed to deliver the most horrifying chapter yet. Confusion abounds because Sienna Shaw has returned to Miles County. The bodies of Art the Clown and Victoria Hayes lie dormant in an abandoned building. One is in a bathtub, and the other is in a rocking chair. The film mixes flashbacks and present-day scenes. It reveals how Art and Vicky managed to regain their movement. Meanwhile, the Little Pale Girl remains mysteriously absent.

The narrative takes a turn when two demolition men arrive unannounced and stumble upon the seemingly lifeless bodies. Their movements become crucial to Sienna’s premonitions and visions as she reunites with her family after five long years. It was only her time in a mental hospital that had halted Art and Vicky’s reign of terror.

Fans receive a handwritten letter from Jonathan to Sienna. It arrives while small glimpses into the lore surrounding the notorious killer clown are sparse. In it, he expresses his beliefs about the ongoing massacre. Many speculate that Vicky plays a key role in a supernatural coven. This coven has long taken an interest in Art’s gruesome exploits. This malevolent group reportedly uses him as a vessel to entice women to become carriers of darkness.

Unverified reports circulating online suggest that unsuspecting moviegoers were shown the film. This reportedly happened to capture their reactions for promotional purposes. Notably, these reports are particularly prevalent on Reddit. While Bloody Disgusting has not confirmed any incidents of audience members vomiting, numerous walkouts were certainly noted.

Interestingly, Terrifier 3 does not feature a final credit scene, leaving fans waiting for more once again. However, it does delve into the origin story of the Ninth Circle. Toward the film’s conclusion, Art is seen riding a bus. A woman reads from a book connected to this dark lore. Many discuss Art’s true nature theorizing that he was once human. They also believe he was granted his diabolical powers by the Devil himself and that the Devil is possessing Vicky.

Art The Clown Is Back in Terrifier 3

The third installment might not push boundaries solely through violence. However, it certainly includes scenes that will linger in viewers’ minds. Yet it’s the underlying themes and intensity that might provoke the most outcry. Some critics, like Mother of Movies, may not favor the series for its brutality. However, Leone’s expertise in practical effects is undeniable. For those who appreciate visceral gore, this film is a must-see in the horror genre.

From the very start, the film sets a gruesome stage that escalates over its 2-hour and 5-minute runtime. Picture the warmth of Christmas—cookies and twinkling lights—suddenly shattered by Art’s unprovoked slaughter of a young family with an ax. Presents delivered to unsuspecting children waiting patiently to tell Santa what they want only to find Art as their replacement.

If you can make it past the first act, brace yourself for an experience that’s sure to leave an impression. Better than number 2, the narrative and comedic elements take some of the edge off. A watchable and entertaining experience, one that fans of the franchise will enjoy. Even if it ends on another cliffhanger.

Performances are excellent with a couple of well-placed cameos in the cast granted by Leone’s increased budget. The audience found Bradley Stryker (Devil in Ohio) a surprise. Clint Howard (Apollo 13) delighted horror fans as well. Chris Jericho (Dark Match) brought excitement, and Tom Savini (From Dusk Til Dawn) made a sneaky appearance as a bystander. Daniel Roebuck (Final Destination) was my standout favorite appearance. Jason Patric (The Lost Boys) was just gravy.
