The Mystery of the Night was my first horror film from the Philippines. But, if you’re looking for some new Pinoy movies to watch, Misterio de la Noche is not available yet as of 2020. The story begins with black images set against a blank background to create a shadow show. It’s very well done and one of my favorite parts of the film. This same shadow-type puppet show was again used at the end and let the viewers in on a prologue.

Mystery of the Night comes complete with an enchanted forest full of evil spirits. Set in the 1900s the men in the Spanish-ruled Philippines did everything they could to cover up their many misdeeds. A creepy monologue given by a pregnant woman leaves little to the imagination of what happened to her. She is banished to the woods and her baby is taken by the very same animal-like spirits that dwell there. From here the narration takes a bit of a turn as a man from town ventures into the very same forest. The child we saw get taken by shadows grew up with ghouls and demons and fell in love with him.
Directed by Adolfo Alix Jr. and written by Rody Vera and, Maynard Manansala. Adolfo has come from screenwriting early in his career before moving on to direct features in 2006. The film has a skeletal cast, practical effects, and modest computer graphics to enhance some of the forest creatures. It’s easy to see why Adolfo was named as part of the “Next Generation Asia 2020” list by The Hollywood Reporter. In this top 20 list of people in the publication, Alix Jr. was reported as “the best and brightest among their peers.”
Mystery Of The Night Reviewed – Best World Cinema
It’s difficult to make a film like this work and, despite not being to my usual taste I can’t help but be reminded of last year’s break-out hit film Tigers Are Not Afraid. In the same vein, they are both magical in their way and encompass traditional values, morals, and horror. This film is not as good as the latter though but it has charm.
When the Night Comes Falling From the Pinoy Movie Sky
My oh my was there a lot of screaming. For example, the screaming felt endless. Even though I have a penchant for horror movies which generally have lots of loud cries, it grates on me when overdone, even within some of the best horror I’ve ever seen. Those with the talent to subdue their victims so we still understand the anguish but don’t get a headache are often few and far between.
Subsequently, some of the more drawn-out scenes which included the wails of a woman in crisis and pain or having lost her love or having lost her child seemed to be the thing that made this film run, way longer than was necessary. Certainly, this premise would have felt better with fewer minutes. And definitely a lot less screaming.
On the other hand, in the final scenes where a man lets out a scream, suddenly any scream on-screen, is silent. I was glad for it, however, these final screams would have been much more impactful had some of the others been orchestrated in the same way.
