Fall 2022, One Of The Best Movies About Heights, Ever
Lionsgate’s Fall movie is a minimalistic thriller about surviving a crappy situation. In the throes of extreme sports, a group of friends loses Dan as they scale up the side of a mountain. Flash forward and Dan’s wife Becky is not doing so well. She hits the pills and alcohol hard. So hard her father James (Jeffery Dean Morgan) can’t figure out a way to reach her. But her best friend can. Lucky for us, Becky’s bestie Hunter is also a vlogger with 60,000 followers so we get to see lots of reckless hanging off small ledges with phones in hand while we watch the fate of them both once they get stuck up a very very high tower.
That’s all there is to Fall, only in between, there is some drama between the two girls when they have ample time to talk about their pasts since drifting apart. The title delivers in spades if you’re looking for a tense and nail-biting survival movie. Somehow, two girls risking death to overcome their fears and sadness make for excellent viewing. Special effects are amazing, the views from the top are scenic and the bonus of gigantic vultures waiting for their next meal turns the dial to make you hold your breath more often than not.
Fall Detection Watch
More than once I was reminded of similarly structured horror films like Open Water, 47 Meters Down, and Crawl only this time in Fall, we are taken out of the water. Fall keeps the pace at a rapid breathing level with taut and well-thought-out decision-making by both leads. Perhaps the fact they climbed to the top of a 2000-meter-high radio tower (2000-ft B67 TV Tower) in the first place could be deemed idiotic however, we all have our vices. Becky and Hunter seem to like endorphin chasing while scampering up anything vertical.
The film The Fall not only excels visually but also showcases a commendable level of creativity within its narrative structure. This creativity peaks as the story unfolds, leading to a twist in the latter half of the movie that is both unexpected and satisfying. It is one of those cinematic moments that have the audience recalibrating everything they’ve seen before the reveal, a testament to the clever storytelling employed by the filmmakers.
Audience members who are fans of Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s work may find themselves wishing he had more screen time. His presence brings a unique depth to his characters. Unfortunately, it appears he wasn’t available for a more physically demanding part of the production on the particular day that required significant climbing. It remains a small disappointment in an otherwise leveled-up movie experience.
