Heartthrob poster

Casual thriller movies on Netflix. You’ve got to admit, they are a risky choice. But I like thriller movies and I like Keir Gilchrist and Aubrey Peeples, the latter whose wonderful role in the comedy series “Atypical” had me binge-watching every season. The “Heartthrob” movie wants to be romantic but the theme is treated with very clumsy gloves. Had it plonked its heavy feet into the horror genre, it might have gotten away with where it eventually landed. However, the film never quite gets into either of its nominated genre arenas.

Total Eclipse of My Heartthrob Movie

Sam and Henry meet on bad terms. Both think badly of one another, however, Sam knows how to give a monologue that sticks. Her dramatic statement about misconceptions is so compelling that the words he scrawled in his journal of Sam’s conquests with the lads are instantly crossed out. Sam’s background in Heartthrob is peppered with horrible events. Her father committed suicide, her friend died and the boys she keeps as friends tease her about her penchant for hiccuping whenever things get really steamy.

Henry, on the other hand, is MIT-worthy but socially awkward and generally unliked. Once within the good graces of someone like Sam though, people suddenly think the sun shines out of his butt. It doesn’t matter that he’s possessive or handsy or sabotaged her car to get to know her better. It all sounds relatively simple in the first half. Blind infatuation based on calculated stalking results in Sam thinking she scored herself a real catch.

Written and directed by Chris Sivertson, his works include gems like I Know Who Killed Me (2007), The Lost (2006), and All Cheerleaders Die (2001) all of which are widely loved and hated at the same time. The Heartthrob Netflix movie was released in June 2017. For where to watch the dark and insidious Heartthrob movie check ReelGood.com or InstantWatcher.com.

Performances aren’t at all bad, but the overall connection to any of the characters is pretty thin. To expect them to then have the connection required with each other to float the story was just never going to happen.

Listen to Her Heart In This Netflix Thriller Movie

Heartthrob is essentially a boy meets girl story. While it almost screams to herald the sentiment that love is blind, it almost certainly slaps that onus only onto females in the script. In another scene with one of Sam’s friends, this simple statement is ground even harder. The friend proceeds to say she’s turned on by her boyfriend’s disregard to eat a burger without smearing ketchup all over his face. She wipes it off for him and they make out. That’s what love is, I guess. It’s ignoring the ketchup when there is ketchup there.

Lastly, take from this film what you will, if anything the tonal shifts within the structure of this thriller movie’s narrative are hard to buy. Similarly, as a stalker obsession film, I’ve seen better, but I’ve also seen much worse.

Side Note: Certifications on this film indicate its target audience is the younger set. I’m not sure I’d be comfortable promoting this to vulnerable teens. It’s not really a movie you’d watch with mom and dad either as there are lots of uncomfortable scenes and implications throughout.
