First of all, I have seen Cube from 1997 a bunch of times. Especially now that it’s on Netflix, it’s time to answer those burning questions once and for all. Seems there are a lot of people asking, is the Cube movie scary? Secondly and straight to the point. This is a spoiler write-up. If you want to be surprised by the deaths in this film, this is not the place to be. We should talk first about the movie, though.
What is the movie Cube about?
As a science fiction movie, it certainly does its job. There are plenty of super-efficient traps within the four walls of any room inside the maze. All up there are seven people within the setting during the film. Most can explain what they were doing before waking up inside the box, but no one knows how to get out.
The film begins with just one man, Julian wide-eyed and bushy-tailed who shows us what the boxes are made of. I don’t mean that literally, but figuratively. The first scene is similar to the opening of the classic film Ghost Ship (2002.) That man gets removed from this life as if a giant vegetable dicer was inserted into the very room he is in.
What was the Purpose of the Cube?
Like many movies before and after this one, the face behind a death trap maze has a rich crazy guy simply looking to get his rocks off. Here though, even if you look at the sequel and the prequel; there is no intentional purpose for the place the contestants find themselves.
It was originally built to test people as a site for teleportation (according to Cube Zero), but even in its futuristic form in Hypercube, its base function is death traps as well. People were only put inside to ensure the cube could not be destroyed. If it is still being seen to be used, then the people who know about it can keep spending money on it.
Is Cube Zero Movie A Prequel?
“Cube Zero” is the final film and serves as a prequel to this 1997 horror movie.
- 1997 Cube
- 2002 Cube 2 Hypercube
- 2004 Cube Zero
The sequel to this original title was released in 2002. Cube 2: Hypercube came five years after the first film and the prequel came in 2004. Almost everyone agrees that the original film is the best.
What Happened to Kazan in Cube?
Kazan is the final character to be found inside the deadly puzzle box He is the only one who doesn’t die. Not because he is the best at avoiding death traps but because of his acquired skill of being a savant. His maths skills ensured that the group’s only way out was to have him solve the complicated algorithms they needed to find the exit. McNeil, the Police Officer would have easily killed him if Worth hadn’t stopped him from getting out as well.
Is the Cube Movie Scary?
To sum up, the Cube movie is not scary unless, of course, you suffer from claustrophobia. Every scene is shot in a small room. All the players climb in and out of them throughout the whole film.
However…
The gore levels, even from the opening scenes are well done for a film from 1997. If gore and violence are something you find disturbing and being disturbed causes you to be afraid then it will be scary for you. Some people get sliced up, corroded from acid, bashed, stabbed, crushed, dropped, and slapped.
In addition, the films’ original maturity rating was R, but over time some countries have lowered this to between 13 and 16 years and over. At the end of the day, horror films are made to cause emotions of a cathartic array. Films of this nature can make you feel dismayed and worried, and allude to your deepest fears. Additionally, horror is supposed to shock or get you on edge. It doesn’t have to have ghosts and monsters in it to be included in the genre and it certainly doesn’t have to be just ‘scary.’
