I See You from Saban Films reviewed on Mother of Movies

I See You movie 2019 is a September release that went under the radar. A hidden gem not to be confused with another film of the same name. I SEE YOU stars Helen Hunt alongside other stellar cast members. Whenever I see Hunt, I think of the film Twister or the TV show she starred in; Mad About You. I like her and I think seeing her name indicates a solid film. The movie sets out as looking like the horror movie it’s labeled to be. A boy rides through an isolated forest at speed on his bike. His body is thrown through the air and that’s the last we see of him.

Until news clips are shown to explain this boy is now missing, presumed to be kidnapped. Investigators are on the case and one of them is Greg Harper (Jon Tenney) husband to Hunt’s Jackie and father to Connor. Many will remember Connor as Cole from 2017’s smash hit The Babysitter. In this film, he’s a rather feisty teen, caught up in his parent’s poor life choices.

The story is very busy. It’s also the type of narrative that will have you wondering whether you’ve seen it before. I literally stopped the movie and checked my film log. That’s not a slight on the overall quality, it simply has a lot of components that many thrill-seeking film lovers will have come across in the past. This time though, they are all in one place.

It’s the pacing and the myriad of pieces that will keep you on your toes in I See You. For me, I guessed early on which angle the title was headed towards. I was still surprised at how many characters were involved in getting there. For this reason, the movie works really well.

Directed by Adam Randall

As Adam Randall’s follow-up directorial movie for iBoy and Level Up, I would say it’s a better film. I do like his ability to create tension and put the time into a voyeuristic type of view. In his previous film iBoy especially, there is really a sense of being there, close up, not missing a thing. Small spaces are his friends. In this story, the subplot of two phroggers making a video on squatting in other people’s houses makes for some really interesting scenes.

But what’s a phrogger you ask? As explained by Mindy (Libe Barer) a phrogger bounces from ‘pad to pad’ and makes use of places in large houses to crash for a short period of time. Mindy proclaims her time doing this is more out of necessity and better than being on the streets. Also, she’s making a documentary.

With all this going on and a high-profile crime spree related back to a cold case involving a serial killer, many will find I See You like a lot of good things. It’s certainly a film you must pay attention to, which is always good. I can definitely recommend this one as a good thriller. Not an excellent masterpiece but if you like connecting the dots and spotting the clues, you’ll have a good time with it. You can watch I See You on Netflix in the USA and on SBS in Australia.
