There was a lot of chatter on social media land about Butt Boy. It’s a strange movie. This new film by Tyler Cornack and, Ryan Koch fits squarely in its special category. With a title like Butt Boy, many will certainly simply give this one a hard pass. I try not to be influenced by expectations.
After recently watching an amazing film called Swallow about a woman with Pica I simply did not want to miss a possible profound counter. I mean Swallow is all about putting things in your mouth which probably ought to not be there and Butt Boy is well, obviously about the opposite of this. It certainly is a strange movie, but is it worth watching?
This funny and extreme movie is definitely about a man who discovers he can make things disappear into, well, his Butt. To be clear, this review for Butt Boy will be a spoiler review. I’ll do my best to explain what happens in this film.
If You’ve Ever Lost the TV Remote, Try Looking Here
Within six minutes of this movie presenting its topic, I spewed forth a fit of laughter. A couple, Chip and Anne have a new baby. The camera hones in on this dour man. Everything about Chip screams unhappy (who is played by its writer-director Tyler Cornack.) The music is akin to the tinkle often heard in mystery movies. Where are all the missing items going? First, his wife can’t find the television’s remote control. Subsequently, the dog also suspiciously disappears.
I instantly had trouble with the couple’s baby going missing. Chips’ affliction is put forward as highly sexual. He doesn’t know things will disappear, he starts doing it because he likes it. It doesn’t take him long to realize his new addiction comes with a bonus. Like magic, any whole item he puts there vanishes. But you can’t disappear a baby without consequences, so the police are called in. Furthermore, searches are undertaken. Finally, news channels begin reporting on these strange events surrounding vanishing people and pets.
Butt Boy Spoiler Review, A Strange Movie
Fast Forward 9 Years
Suddenly we are catapulted forward 9 years and left completely in the dark as to what could have happened between then and now. Chip is part of a support group for people with substance abuse problems. He’s been part of this ensemble for some time and he is immediately assigned a new member to mentor. This means Chip has overcome his addiction. Tyler Rice Plays Detective Russell Fox and they chat with each other in a diner. As Russel replays all the things he misses about being a person with alcohol use disorder it’s apparent that Chip might miss a few things about his addiction too.
Butt Boy Company Mantra
“That’s What RPM Does Best and That’s What RPM is all About – Perseverance”
Quote from the title Butt Boy
The overtly absurd full movie for Butt Boy is totally in conflict with itself. Somber background songs about loss play. The overall tone of the title is deadly serious before cutting back to Chip with a shoe half in and half out of his butt, mid-position as he fails to refrain from his addiction and relapses. Like a person with a substance abuse disorder, his eyes roll back into his head and his behavior resembles the same ones that are shown to narrate a faltering drug user.
Chip works for a company called RPM. He’s in I.T. and, it’s bring-your-kid to work, day. In the same fashion as before, one of the kids is suddenly missing. Where could he possibly be? Chip is looking undeniably suspicious and the lengths he goes to hide his addiction are nothing short of commendable.
At first, I was inclined to look for the big metaphor as is so often the case in stories of this ilk. Is it a film about addiction? A film about obsession? Although both of these notions are touched on, I’m more inclined to look at Chip as a melancholic, bored serial killer. He hates his job and dislikes his wife and it’s reasonable to assume he didn’t like his dog or think much of having kids.
In any case, he gets pleasure from his activities and pleasure from deleting things he feels are unnecessary. As much as I want to look at Chip as some kind of symbol for the bigger picture, he enjoys getting away with what he’s doing.
Is Butt Boy a Metaphor?
Like anything, too much of a good thing is bad for you. Later, his reckless pass time slowly catches up with Chip. All things considered, he attempts to cover up his crimes and then tries to take credit for his misdeeds when someone else is blamed.
Is this Butt Boy absurd? You bet. Is it worth watching? Absolutely but on the negative side, the film does lose its way a little in the final half. The finale, while explosive, might not do it for some. Also, if you have an aversion to things related to bottoms, this will not be the movie for you. You will see all the items mentioned in this review covered in poop. In particular, there is a butt vortex and some scenes involve the lighting of certain gases. You have been amply warned.
