One of my favorite films is (Office Space (1999.) The trailer for the Bloodsucking Bastards horror movie makes it look a lot like Office Space except it’s one of those vampire movies you want to love but sometimes do not. In what should be a mash-up between Shaun of the Dead and Office Space, Bloodsucking Bastards is set in a corporate building. The job is soul-killing. Literally.
Bloodsucking Bastards Review
The score in the Bloodsucking Bastards film is kind of cool. It gives the whole movie a bit of a weird vibe, but I liked it. The introduction song sounds a lot like Kelly Clarkson which sets the tone of the slow and steady start. The editing at the start is disjointed and flash-card-like. It is also a scene where the sound barrier created by the shell of a car amounts to more than expected.
The office setting immediately rings true if comparing it to the film Office Space or even the series but not because it’s hilariously funny but because the characters seem very familiar to them. A new Sales Manager is introduced amidst a sea of vampire puns that are clever and witty and smear a smirk on my face. It’s dumb but funny.
A scene set against the backdrop of going to the toilet while alone in the office falls flat with me. I know this is a dry horror comedy but somehow the tension keeps getting killed like people in the office. Or maybe it’s a joke aimed at all the horror movies that announce their whereabouts prior to being killed. I don’t know, I think I just get nervous around people being killed in toilets. With the addition of more announcements around going to the toilet, my patience is wearing thin.
Is This Film, “Office Space” With Vampires?
The jokes aren’t funny enough. The scenes aren’t creepy enough and, the script isn’t appealing enough to pull everything together. In addition, the narrative revolves around unrequited love and it’s just not compelling or convincing. The head vampire is obvious enough to be the head vampire but too subtle to create momentum with his killing spree. The pacing is entirely off in Bloodsucking Bastards movie and I just can’t quite put my finger on why I wanted to turn it off. It has all the ingredients but it’s just not rising into a fantastic cake, I mean film.
The characters just aren’t engaging through either and the script reeks of uncreative storytelling. The weirdo employees in Bloodsucking Bastards movie have no kookiness and they fail to make an impact one way or the other. I find I’m enjoying the familiarity of a movie and series I love without actually enjoying the film. Is there something wrong with me?
Overall, Bloodsucking Vampires didn’t work for me but don’t forget I did say my sense of humor is a bit broken. Subsequently, if it sounds good, give it a go. It might work for you.
