Fried Barry began life as a short film in 2017 before Ryan Kruger, writer, director, and producer, expanded it into the feature length fever dream it became. The premise is exactly as unhinged as it sounds: a heroin addict gets abducted by aliens, his body gets hijacked, and what follows is tonnes of dank atmosphere and a viewing experience that sits comfortably in a genre category of its own. There is nothing average about Fried Barry. That is entirely the point.

Why the Fried Barry Short Film Works
When the short film Fried Barry was released, Kruger was clear that this kind of film was one of a kind in the context of South African cinema. Short film adaptations are always a risk, the following they build can work for or against the feature, but Fried Barry had a massive audience before the feature even had a release date. In an interview with thesouthafrican.com, Kruger said he believed the film would be unforgettable and hoped it would help pave the way for growth in the South African film industry. The story follows Barry, a washed-up hot mess who spends his evenings abusing his wife and son and attending to his addiction with equal commitment. After a particularly heated example of both, Barry leaves the house in a drug-induced state and finds himself on an alien spaceship. What follows is not just an abduction, it’s a full body takeover. Barry is now just the vessel, and these visitors to Earth have plans.
What those plans involve is a joyride through Cape Town as the aliens use and abuse Barry’s body more thoroughly than Barry ever managed himself. Sex, violence, and alien abduction. What more could you want from a horror movie?
