Director-writer Marc Cartwright wants to show you the lowlights of the dating world. More to the point, why it feels so hard to get finding love right? How chasing that elusive connection can be viewed in a number of different ways. Surprisingly even the concept of inadvertently being invisible versus wanting to be invisible are two very different things.

Aiden, (played by Baker Chase Powell), just wants a connection. He fantasizes about finding that special someone who likes what he likes and turning it into the relationship he dreams about. Aiden is also trying to do this by playing the online dating circuit. His apartment is filled with very concerning items of his very palpable desire to get everything just right.

At work, Elaine (played by Ashley Jones) thinks Aiden is charming. She smiles at him, gives him thoughtful gifts, and makes eye contact with him. Here Aiden has the ability to talk with ease. Elaine, she’s the invisible one. Not even registering a blip on Aiden’s radar.

A chance encounter with a new neighbor in Aiden’s building with Chelsea (Samantha Boscarino) shows him that perhaps not everyone in the entire universe has zero in common with him.

In Aiden’s willingness to obsess about the smallest details, he misses more overt and obvious queues. As his obsession with connecting with the ‘right’ person increases it’s easier to see what Aiden should notice but doesn’t.

We Die Alone is the perfect blend of personality types those in the dating pool see. Souls bump up against each other at extreme ends of the spectrum in the quest to find love.

Generally, some are too hurt, others too afraid, and those that never make the first move. There are those that can’t find the right words, others who are willing to love anyone, and without a doubt those that think the whole process is a game to be played and won. In a perfect world, these people would be matched with the ones that could aim to bridge that gap. But that’s not how life works.

Cartwright’s pinpoint accuracy in finding the right angle to have all these elements overlap makes We Die Alone work on a few different levels and crescendo into a horrific finale.
