Black Box (2020) Poster from Blumhouse Movies

Welcome to the Blumhouse is a TV series of suspense films aimed at a wider audience. Sure it’s still horror, but it’s light. Instead of trying to convince the horror crowd there is something bloody and drenched in gore inside its four walls, the “Welcome to the Blumhouse” collection instead went for a more palatable subject matter. Amazon Studios presents the first four films in the collection The Lie, “Black Box”, Nocturne, and Evil Eye which all premiered on Prime Video as a new movie in 2020.

Black Box Warning

The Black Box movie is more of a mixture of films like Get Out and Us mixed in with a little of the action movie Total Recall movie thrown in for good measure. The story follows Nolan after a car crash that resulted in his wife’s death. Left to raise his small daughter alone, he is now struggling with amnesia and life in general.

Leaning heavily into the science fiction creep zone, he gets referred to a memory specialist, Dr. Brooks who offers Nolan some special therapy. She’s highly optimistic her treatment will sort out his memory loss by allowing him to walk around in his subconscious. While the Black Box movie never enters the nightmarish territory that horror fans appreciate, this title leans heavily into science fiction to get its point across.

Black Box Testing For Scariness

In the virtual reality world, Nolan sees faceless people and discovers memories he can’t place. What’s more, a spidery man gets closer and closer each time he goes under and he finds himself under attack. Atmospherically, the Black Box movie is wonderfully dark. Nolan (played by Mamoudou Athie) can’t remember what sort of husband he was to his wife. His daughter Ava assumes a parental-style role but her polished performance oozes the sadness of a child grieving for almost two parents. It’s scary but not in a horror movie type of way.

The Black Box movie never quite places its two feet into the horror genre and instead just dips its toes. But what it may lack in true scariness for some it will surely make up for with familiarity in its Black Mirror-like themes. The storyline doles out familiar lines but the final act shines. Osei Kuffour’s directorial debut shows that he has what it takes to bring more of his talent to audiences. Since releasing the Black Box movie, Kuffour has gone on to work for the TV show series In The Dark. He has worked on two episodes titled Safe and Sound and I Know What You Did Last Night.
