Derived from a super scary short film of the same title, the story for the Selfie From Hell movie goes like this; Julia is a vlogger (online blogger) and she is visiting from Germany. After she arrives in the US to see her cousin Hannah, she seems nervous and upset and Hannah sees her try to go online by typing in “‘Blackroom.onion”. Soon after settling in at Hannah’s, she falls mysteriously ill. Has the selfie she took got something to do with her sudden sickness?
The Camera Never Lies
Alyson Walker plays Hannah, Julia’s cousin. Alyson who was in the short film Adam is the best thing about this movie. I haven’t been overtly disappointed in a horror movie for weeks. Taken from such a solid and relatable concept, Selfie From Hell takes a nosedive within the first few minutes because it already seems like Julia is knee-deep in the story. She practically shoves the phone out of her hand when Hannah tries to take a selfie of them to celebrate her arrival.
The original short film (which you can watch below) shows a figure in the background that gets closer with every snap. In the feature film, Julia sees that same thing when she goes to put her things away in Hanna’s spare room. In her wisdom, Julia takes a selfie. When Julia becomes sick, Hannah calls a doctor to the house to check on her. The Dr. states she has a bacterial infection and leaves them to their own devices.
Is Selfie From Hell Movie Worth Watching?
Afterward, we spend what seems like an eternity watching Hannah ask a practically comatose Julia whether she is awake. You know, because text messages keep getting sent from her phone. When things become a little odd and Julia is still not awake, Hannah calls Trevor, not the doctor because that would be silly.
Trevor’s entrance as Hannah’s online tech-nerd friend (Tony Giroux) comes with some extremely dodgy script. The type where you want to reach inside your flat-screen TV and put your hand over his mouth. Anything to stop the pain from hearing the lines he has been given. Selfie From Hellmovie is a frustrating film from a few angles and the poor decision-making trope is just one of them.
I suppose the best part of Selfie From Hell 2018 would be Ian Butcher, (series Arrow and Almost Human and RoboCop 2014). He plays the mysterious online ‘helper’ and calls himself F34R3473R. Giving an awesome speech that really could have been the premise for this film, but it isn’t.
The filmmakers decided to go elsewhere which is a shame because scenes are the ones that will stick in my mind when hopefully the rest of the Selfie From Hell disappears from it. His role almost lifts this out of the gutter, except when his scene ends, we are right back in it. Overall this scary movie had plenty of wasted opportunities that failed to add value to the original short film.
