Roadkill 2024 was released early January to mixed reviews. Known only as The Driver (Caitlin Carmichael), a woman sets off on the road headed far away from the chaos of police on the hunt for a serial killer. A little lost, she pulls up beside a hitchhiker to ask for directions and after a brief conversation decides they can help each other. They are both headed for the same place, Abbeville. As the two get acquainted, the hitchhiker tells the woman he is trying to get home for his mom’s birthday.
In the opening scenes, the Roadkill movie treats viewers to some incidental backstories for the man that immediately raises suspicions. His childhood is shown to be traumatic. His mother treated him horrifically employing discipline around food, and unhinged punishments. He also had to sleep outside in the dog kennel. One can only assume his travels are for reasons aside from birthday cake and blowing out candles if he is on his way to visit. With all the attention on the mysterious grifter, the focus is shifted to The Driver. Childhood memories reveal she didn’t have such a great time growing up, and it becomes logical that something is amiss.
Roadkill Movie
Despite thinking early on that the stage was set trying to figure out who the Highway Hunter might be, there are signs that the damsel in distress might not be as sweet as she makes out. As they stop at a gas station, all eyes are on her. The Driver is blessed in the looks department, and the first man to send a seedy side eye her way is treated to a good time in the restroom. Intentionally highlighting that men are the cause of her dysfunction he remains there battered and mostly dead and she rejoins her travelling companion relaxed and happy.
Starring in his film, Roadkill is the director Warren Fast as Sherrif John. He and his deputy Corey stay one step behind until they finally catch up with the duo. From here, there is plenty of action and despite most of the violence happening off-screen many of the kills are well executed and look great on screen. There is a superb car explosion in the second half utilizing practical effects which is well worth the money in the tight budget. Cinematography is a highlight for Roadkill featuring some good-looking aerial car chases and nice smooth camera work.
On the downside, I’ve never been a fan of cat-and-mouse chases that outstay their welcome. And here it begins wearing thin at times. The pacing slows down in the middle and feels like filler before it picks back up and hammers home. The story is solid if you are in the mood for a pleasant time passer that centers itself on comeuppance and, vengeance using two unlikely companions with pasts they wish they could forget.
