Streaming on Hulu in the USA and Disney+ and plenty of other movie platforms, Fresh 2022 is a surprisingly good watch. This film is specifically catered to the more discerning horror crowd who appreciate a disturbing and gruesome narrative. With elements reminiscent of “The Loved Ones” and “Hannibal,” “Fresh” weaves a hellish survival story that delves into the dark and cruel realm of the modern dating world.
The film’s editing is skillfully done, leaning toward the immersive viewpoints rather than being from a voyeuristic angle. “Fresh” offers a new take on a genre that can often feel formulaic and worn-out. Despite its daunting premise, it’s hard not to recommend this quirky slasher horror movie to anyone who loves an original twist on familiar tropes.
Modern Dating With A Twist
Noa, played by the exceptional Daisy Edgar Jones, effortlessly steals the spotlight in Mimi Cave’s directorial debut. Her innocent yet wily portrayal outshines even the charismatic Sebastian Stan, (in the role of Steve.) Steve is a charming doctor Noa meets in a chance encounter at a grocery store. This relatable scenario, depicting Noa’s determination to navigate the treacherous waters of the modern dating scene, resonates with any woman who has been subjected to it. While some may perceive potential warning signs as red flags, Noa’s decision to embrace the unknown and place her trust in the universe is a testament to her unwavering optimism. What chances would you take to find love? The Fresh movie attempts to answer that question.
There is nothing new about a storyline where a serial killer enjoys human meat but in this title, the theme is mapped out with a new spin. In Fresh, Steve has taken the skills that he’s good at (Surgical) and leveled them up as a business model. A serial killer who enjoys the finer things in life, Steven tends to “1% of the 1%” giving those that can afford it, something they can’t get. Combining a romantic thread and a manipulative nature is what works. We get a glimpse into his current and past prisoners, what sort of storage an operation like this would need, and first-hand footage of just how one cooks humans in a fine dining setting.
Is Fresh 2022 About Cannibalism?
There are glimpses of a Stockholm syndrome marriage as Steve’s other life is slowly revealed. Meanwhile, Noa’s journey is the most layered in “Fresh.” Generally, films of this nature take a more sordid and desperate route. Here we are granted a glimmer of hope by giving Noa the ability to make smart decisions. She makes good use of her screen time under the direst circumstances. It makes for a pleasant change if you’ve seen loads of like-minded horror and thriller films that rely on stupider and stupider choices.
Billed as a horror comedy, Fresh will never give you a laugh-out-loud cackle. Instead, the narrative opts for more absurdist darkly draped, and subtle humor. The type of snarky atmospheric in-jokes that keeps you off guard. The type that smacks you about with its sinister agenda. Once the title reveals the true intention of exactly where this movie is headed, it never really turns back.
Fresh is a fantastic off-beat film that will surprise most and comes highly recommended.
