Musicians traversing into feature films isn’t a new thing. Madonna has done it. Lady Gaga hung up her meat suit for a spell to do “American Horror Story.” Mark Wahlberg delivered his penis as Dirk Diggler and of course, everyone knows of David Bowie as the Goblin King in “The Labyrinth.” Fans of the Foo Fighters were always going to love the “Studio 666” movie. How could they not?
Music lovers, in general, were bound to like nearly all films centered around supernatural forces creating havoc while rock legends put together a new album. But overall is Studio 666 a good movie? Considering the story was written by the man, Dave Grohl himself, aside from groupies for this amazing music group is the film something you could watch again?
Despite occasional moments of unpolished performances, they surprisingly enhance rather than detract from the overall experience. Moreover, the storyline is so good that even the most discerning horror movie enthusiasts will enjoy it. While indulging in this comedy-infused bloodbath, I found myself contemplating whether the film would have achieved the same level of entertainment without the presence of the Foo Fighters. It is quite doubtful, but this does not diminish the fact that there are moments of sheer brilliance within the narrative.
The plot pays homage to a plethora of cult classic horror films, spanning from “A Nightmare on Elm Street” to “Ghostbusters” to “The Exorcist”, leaving no stone unturned when it comes to horror tropes. Furthermore, it astutely criticizes both the music industry and the stereotypes surrounding rock stars. Most importantly, the kills in the film are undeniably spectacular, exhibiting a level of gore and creativity that far surpassed my expectations.
Foo Fighters Rule
Full disclosure, I must admit to my strong bias when it comes to reviewing a film written and cast with one of the greatest bands ever, the Foo Fighters. In my opinion, they are truly phenomenal. I would go to great lengths, even sacrificing a finger if that’s what they requested. With that said, I am confident that Studio 666 is a fantastic movie as well. While it may be silly at times, and some people who don’t appreciate horror mixed with humor might find it challenging to enjoy, there’s no doubt in my mind that this is a film I would happily watch again.
There are only momentary times when Foo Fighter’s musical greatness is featured. To be honest, it could have handled a little more of Dave Grohl’s vocals. But these musical moments are streamlined effortlessly into parts that suit. It also means the film plays out like a movie and not like an extended music video which is probably a smart move. Gags range from dad jokes to laugh-out-loud scenes which is the best-case scenario for any film in this genre niche.
Hello? Lionel Richie Stars in Studio 666
The cameos and cast for Studio 666 were a stroke of genius. Lionel Richie pops in for an unexpected few seconds after Grohl is seen singing “Hello.” But I can imagine the lineup from other A-listers who probably wanted in on this too. Perhaps they were turned down to keep the characters tidy and not appear like a giant Muso reunion. There were certainly enough recognizable faces throughout from both the music world and the movie world to keep your mouth agape. And let’s not forget Jeff Buhler (Midnight Meat Train) just happened to put the screenplay together alongside Rebecca Hughes. Was Studio 666 ever going to fail? I think not.
