Retitled “The Whooper”, The Occupant follows an infamous family attending their family home after the death of their mother. The four siblings have inherited what’s left of the inherited estate and arrive to sort out what to do with it. This particular house has a dark history which was eventually made into a documentary-style film.
Back in 1975, The Whooper was an evil spirit that compelled the family to eventually leave but not before creating a cult classic legend surrounding what happened in the house. A strange woman arrives, camera in hand late the first night they arrive. Her name is Debra and she steadfastly claims their mom left the house to her and doesn’t want the children to have it. Desperate to buy the home, she tries to bargain with them. Just as desperately, the kids start to fight amongst themselves. They each have very specific plans on what to do with the haunted house.
First of all, though, we should probably acknowledge the original title as being slightly goofy. The Whooper gives the whole film an air of silliness that the title probably doesn’t need. Secondly, for a micro-budget horror and thriller story, writer-director Samuel Krebs has done a pretty good job with this. Krebs takes the insanely popular narrative from the Amityville horror and stuffs it inside his own horror movie.
Mirco Budget Horror Movies
Taking ideas from themes like fan-based hysteria to popular true stories that often turn out to be less than they are, The Occupant has a lot to say. Mostly though, for a film within a film within a film, there is a certain charm to everything that rights all its wrongs.
Of course, there are a few editing mistakes and some poor lighting choices. There is a conversational scene that is literally cut off mid-sentence and there are entire scenes shot with just the light streaming through from the windows. But The Whooper is conceptually pretty cool. Worthy of a one-time watch (repeated viewing if you lose track of what’s happening), someone needs to throw this filmmaker some money so he can make this film the movie it’s intended to be.
