The Man From Toronto Movie Poster

Who would have thought, Harrelson and Hart would make a good team? Certainly not me. However, the action and comedy film, The Man From Toronto had just enough over-the-top antics to eventually win me over. As far as I’m concerned, Harrelson works well effortlessly in roles where tonal switches are required. Here he plays the notorious Toronto Man. A ruthless hitman with no tears to be shed for the deaths he pursues. When you see a name like Kevin Hart alongside the title, there are going to be some comedy elements for him to sidle up against.

The story follows Teddy (Kevin Hart) who is well known for his internet blunders. He considers himself the ultimate salesman, however, his status is hindered by either stupidity or a failure to understand his enthusiastic fitness products or both. Following a deploringly generic narrative, Teddy is busy making a baby with his wife who is in turn frustrated with the amount of attention she is getting from her entrepreneurial husband. If you can’t make a woman in a film strong and successful, make her frustrated by the superficial, right?

Despite a superiorly inferior tale of a “good but inept man who wants to make his wife happy” gibe, The Man From Toronto posits enough mildly funny scenes early on to warrant investment. Hart is afforded some good one-liners. And when he decides to book a cabin for his wife’s birthday but gets the address wrong, we aren’t that mad. Watching him realize he is in danger when he is mistaken for the ruthless killer is pretty funny.

Hit Men From Around The World

If you look at the aggregate rating sites, The Man From Toronto has a decent enough rating. The film is sitting at a solid 5.7/10. The main complaints from users on IMBd.com are that the film is “soulless,” “characters are unlikable” and that the CGI effects were terrible. Mother of Movies is on the pro side of the movie. Aside from agreeing the script was underwhelming, I enjoyed a lot of the other aspects. I liked Harrelson’s hitman with a gooey center. Kaley Cuoco (The Flight Attendant) and Elin Barkin (Animal Kingdon) were enjoyable as supporting cast members. I adored seeing The Bold and the Beautiful’s Pierson Fode in a big role like The Man from Miami.

The Man From Toronto is easily a fun popcorn movie that exceeded my expectations. It’s silly but it’s good fun. Especially if you consider things like using rocket launchers in city streets or using FBI agents and civilians in high-scale operations. However, there are definitely worse things to watch on Netflix. This title has enough laughs to see it through.
