House of Darkness 2022 Review

In House of Darkness, Justin Long plays a guy called Hap who we first meet at the end of a long night. A beautiful woman sits in the car’s passenger seat as the two converse awkwardly. Captured in a relatable and realistic scene, Hap tries to figure out whether the night is over or not. When Mina waves the green flag and strongly suggests he comes inside, Hap can’t believe his luck.

Despite the easiness of the conversation and the sheer willingness of the duo, these things in combination are horror movie red flags. As such, Hap and Mina walk towards what looks like an eerie gothic mansion. Additionally, they are in the middle of nowhere, and the tension mounts almost instantaneously. The question is raised and left floating in the cool air. Who is after whom? There’s no mistaking that Hap looks like he’s being led into a dark and dimly led trap.

I often wave a disapproving hand around wishing for better dialogue. So it goes without saying that House of Darkness sets a pretty high bar considering the amount of talking that is included in it. But excellent scripting can only go so far. If you are wanting a quick fix to relieve some of the high-key signals writer and director Neil LaBute throws down, you might leave disappointed. Not everyone likes a movie that’s all talk.

Early on the subtle but obvious hints will lead you to conclude what might be about to happen. Mina isn’t cold even though Hap complains of feeling very chilly. She talks about her many estates and wears a white dress that could be described as old-fashioned. There’s also the matter that even though Longs’ Hap could be considered good-looking, he is probably punching above his weight with Mina (Kate Bosworth.) We do like his ambition though.

House of Darkness Red Flags

The dynamic between the small ensemble cast carries the frivolous weight of themes that pitter-patter out into the night. When Mina is joined by her sister Lucy, Hap begins to look less like the nice guy he purports to be and more like the everyman women expect. Hap takes a phone call from a work colleague and eagerly boasts about his intentions, left alone with Mina’s sister Lucy (Gia Crovatin) he is quick to make it known he doesn’t care who he ends up with, as long as he is there. Labute never beats his audience over the head with more obvious undertones and that’s what makes the majority of House of Darkness a success.

The House of Darkness movie is a hidden gem title that goes down easily. The film was released digitally on October 18th, 2022.
