On The Edge By Soska Sisters 2022

When people talk about “torture porn” in horror movies they are usually referring to a narrative filled with so much overt violence it overshadows the story. On the Edge is the literal meaning of the phrase. Only this film comes without gratuitous gore. Instead, actual sexual practices usually coined with the term, “kink” are casually given a front seat. The Soska Sisters’ newest feature movie is aimed at audiences more accustomed to kink culture. Even those cinephiles that think they like extreme film might have trouble being comfortable with what On the Edge wants to show you.

The title opens with a husband and father, Peter. His two teenage twin daughters and his wife are busy getting ready for an upcoming hockey game and the television is blasting some diatribe from a politician about values in society. Peter is distracted and uninvolved with the family he is surrounded by. A lie straight off the bat, he tells them he is off on a planned business trip. Peter is actually booked in for a 36-hour session with a high-end mistress called Satana.

When he arrives at the hotel there is a loose back and forth with the hotel staff about extra towels. By the time Peter enters his room and lays eyes on Mistress Satana, there is little to say. Things escalate extremely quickly from here on in. He is pushed against a wall amidst cries of anguish. It’s hard to understand exactly what Peter thought he was going to be doing during his stay, but none of it seems to be things that he enjoys particularly. He cries out for help after being suffocated, waking bound, and gagged to a chair.

He shouts and pleads with Mistress Satana when she produces further equipment that sees him tied up and splayed to a wooden device. And don’t even mention the Shibari and BDSM used on what can only be described as a pretty poor prosthetic penis for extended periods. But it doesn’t stop there.

Soska Sisters Give BDSM A Red Hot Go

On the Edge has a run time of almost 2-hours and the Soska Sisters use almost all of it showing us what types of things they can shove into Peter. He also gets put into a giant isolation cage from time to time.

What I did notice though, was that Peter could have stopped the whole thing at any time. He has a safe word. The fact he never utters it tells me he is complicit in everything that happens to him. I try to trust the process. I have nothing against those who have a penchant for all things fetish. However, it just goes on and on and on with no seeming point to it all. I didn’t want to miss finding out why this was all happening or not understand the big reveal if they ever got there. But I too felt a little tortured and less on the edge about halfway through.

Fortunately, they do meander around a big picture for Peter in On the Edge. One that you might miss if you fall asleep or do happen to fast forward. There are some momentary flashbacks that Peter begins to have when he nears the last phase of his time with Mistress Satana. If you want to actually watch the movie or be surprised, don’t read on any further. But Peter’s flashbacks point to him being molested as a child.

The continued use of a small teddy bear that is significant to Peter is used to drive the point home. Mistress Satana also drives a point home, but I will leave that to your imagination. Her practices unlock all of Peter’s past trauma with his mother and her treatment of him after having told her what had happened to him.

Kink Is The Cure

Thankfully Peter is now cured of any haunting remnants of his past after she uses a giant appendage on him. And it seems to be that Kink can cure all.

I can’t say I enjoyed On the Edge and I also have to add that the sound production whether purposeful or by accident was not great. I did really like a scene that utilizes flashing lights to change both Mistress Satana’s and Peter’s faces within every flash. Apart from that, for me, this was their worst film yet.
